CNN’s Fareed Zakaria is no one’s idea of a conservative, but he proved once again on Sunday night that he’s got a lot more self-awareness than most of his fake-news industry brethren. Like Bill Maher and a select few others, Zakaria isn’t so completely eaten up by his own liberal views that he can’t put a mirror up to the ideology once in a while and see the damning flaws staring back. And on CNN this weekend, he did a fantastic job pointing out the blind spots that modern American liberals have been missing for a long time.
“Liberals think they are tolerant but often they aren’t,” Zakaria said on his show Sunday night. “Freedom of speech and thought is not just for warm fuzzy ideas that we find comfortable, it’s for ideas that we find offensive.”
He said that while there were those on the right who disdained intellectual arguments, the same was true for many liberals.
“There is also an anti-intellectualism on the left,” he said. “An attitude of self-righteousness that says we are so pure, we are so morally superior; we cannot bear to hear an idea with which we disagree.”
Zakaria warned against the trend of protesting conservative speakers at American universities, examples of which have been seen from coast to coast. Speakers like Milo Yiannopoulos, Heather MacDonald, Ann Coulter, and even Vice President Mike Pence have been subject to protests that are disruptive and, oftentimes, violent. Zakaria said that the colleges themselves have a responsibility to make sure that certain viewpoints are not shut out of the conversation altogether.
“American universities these days seem committed to every type of diversity except intellectual diversity,” Zakaria said. “Conservative voices and views, already a besieged minority, are being silenced entirely.”
Wow, is that really someone on CNN (other than Jeffrey Lord) saying that conservative voices are a “besieged minority” in America?! Here we thought conservatism (in all its forms – racism, sexism, Islamophobia, homophobia, the list goes on) was the one great evil that was making the U.S. a terrible place to live. Did Zakaria pass this op-ed through the editorial process? How did CNN producers allow him to say this on their airwaves? It’s unfathomable!
We’d like to think that CNN and the rest of the liberal media was finally heeding the wake-up call of the 2016 election, but we’re inclined to believe this was just a momentary glimmer of sanity. Still, we’ll take what we can get.
