Leave it to a NeverTrump conservative to be the one to obliterate common sense and actually give credence to the liberal media’s claims that “both sides” deserve blame for the violence that unfolded at the congressional baseball game last week. RedState’s Erick Erickson has been a fierce critic of Donald Trump since the beginning and now he’s written a column for The Resurgent that – if we didn’t know better – seems designed to make conservatives look just as loony as the liberals who think Trump is a secret Russian agent.
We’ll grant Erickson this: The political left in this country is dangerous. In the mainstream, they are dangerous because they’re using extremist rhetoric and fake news to devise a coup to remove the rightfully elected president from office. On the fringes, they’re dangerous because they believe in blatantly unconstitutional ideas. And on the fringe of the fringes – the area where shooter James Hodgkinson found himself dwelling – they believe in using deadly violence to “save the country” from those horrible, no-good, racist conservatives.
But last we checked, American liberals are not systematically committing genocide. They aren’t throwing Christians into cages and drowning them in the ocean. They aren’t filming videos where they cut off the heads of Trump supporters before calling on legions of followers to go and do likewise. So to carelessly say what Erickson said, that “the political left is becoming the American ISIS” is beyond absurd. It’s so far beyond reason and logic that it doesn’t even qualify as useful hyperbole. It does nothing other than give the other side rhetorical ammunition against conservatives.
Erickson’s main point in the column is that conservatives should consider “secession,” though he doesn’t get around to explaining how that would work.
“The only escape is dissolution,” he writes. “We should part ways if we cannot have federalism. We should start talking about secession. If both sides have decided that every hill is a hill to die on and control of Washington means reward for their friends and punishment of their enemies, we need to end Washington. The way to do that is end the union.”
Yeah…but what is the way to do THAT?
Erickson seemed to oppose Trump because he and a few other conservative thinkers considered themselves far too sophisticated and intelligent to sully themselves with the likes of such a brash, uncouth billionaire and his legions of unwashed supporters. But if HIS brilliant idea is to compare liberals to ISIS and call for an end to the United States…well, we’d question just how “intelligent and sophisticated” he really is.
