Prominent cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles already refuse to cooperate with federal immigration authorities, but it seems that’s not enough for the Liberal Republic of California anymore. In the Age of Trump, the Left Coast is eager to show the rest of the country just how enlightened and progressive they are compared to the president’s horrible, no-good conservatism. As such, Democrats in the state legislature have proposed a bill that would make the entire state a sanctuary for illegal immigrants.
SB54 comes up for debate in the legislature on Tuesday. Written by Senate President Kevin de Leon, the bill will be accompanied by additional legislation earmarking state funds to hire lawyers to protect California residents facing deportation.
“We will not stand by and let the federal government use our state and local agencies to separate mothers from their children,” de León said as he introduced the bill in December.
Last week, in his State of the State address, Governor Jerry Brown went out of his way to cast California as a home for immigrants.
“In California, immigrants are an integral part of who we are and what we’ve become. They have helped create the wealth and dynamism of this state from the very beginning,” Brown said. “We will defend everybody – every man, woman and child – who has come here for a better life and has contributed to the well-being of our state.”
We respect California’s right to exercise self-governance; if the voters want to throw open the doors to every criminal, terrorist, and welfare junkie who crosses the border, that’s their business. This is the kind of madness that results when liberals take control of a state, and they’ve got a stranglehold on California. Good for them. Sorry for conservatives who have to live under this insanity, but that’s the way it is.
That said, there’s a new sheriff in town. And President Trump has made it clear – in rhetoric and in last week’s executive order – that cities and states that deliberately harbor illegal immigrants will risk losing federal funds. This is the choice Californians need to make. Do you want to thumb your nose at federal immigration law? Fine, you can kiss billions of dollars goodbye. Sound like a deal?
And frankly, Trump may need to go even further. If California is going to essentially declare themselves a rogue state, then we need to treat them as such. They can throw security to the wind, but we can’t allow their inane policies to jeopardize the rest of the country. If they won’t limit migration into their state, then we may have to limit migration out of it.
Hopefully some semblance of common sense will prevail before things get to that point. Knowing California Democrats, though, that hope is fading.
