It wasn’t all that long ago that the left knew better than to trust the U.S. intelligence community. We remember it like it was yesterday. Was it not the intel community that led us into the Iraq War with faulty information about Saddam’s store of nuclear and biological weaponry? Was it not only a few short years ago that the left cherished people like Edward Snowden and Chelsea “Don’t Call Me Brad” Manning for leaking information about how our government was spying on us? Was not the left in full agreement that the Patriot Act was a dangerous piece of legislation that would subvert liberty and put our freedom in the hands of unelected spooks? Yes, yes, Pepperidge Farm remembers.
But we’ve turned the page, and the left’s memory is dreadfully short. These days, we are to take everything the intelligence community says as the gospel truth. Why? What happened? Was there some kind of a public accounting? Some sort of evidence that the CIA/NSA/Etc. were now honest and clean and tirelessly dedicated to preserving democracy at any cost? No, all that happened was that they turned against a man named Donald Trump. For the millions of leftists (including the media) who hate Trump, that was more than enough.
Never mind that there is evidence that the intelligence community was politicized in an effort to thwart a Republican candidate for president. Never mind that they flaunted U.S. law in spying on an American citizen who was aligned with the Trump campaign. Never mind that an independent special counsel found no evidence that the Trump campaign was involved in any collusion with Moscow. None of that matters. All that matters is that they wanted what the left wanted – to bring Trump down. If you’re on the same side, you can do anything you want!
So ingrained is this mindset that we saw no outrage whatsoever last week when a former CIA director told a crowd at George Mason University that he was just tickled pink at the way the “Deep State” was subverting the will of the American people and the President of the United States.
“There is something unique you have to agree that now the impeachment inquiry is underway, sparked by a complaint from someone within the intelligence community, it feeds the president’s concern, an often used term about a ‘deep state’ being there to take him out,” said Margaret Brennan, the moderator for the event.
To this, former CIA Acting Director John McLaughlin replied: “Thank God for the Deep State.”
This was not met with horrified gasps but with laughter and applause.
“Everyone here has seen this progression of diplomats and intelligence officers and White House people trooping up to Capitol Hill right now and saying these are doing their duty and responding to a higher call,” said McLaughlin. “With all of the people who knew what was going on here, it took an intelligence officer to step forward and say something about it, which was the trigger that then unleashed everything else.”
Yes, and as we have now seen, that “trigger” turned out to be a total misrepresentation of what Trump said in his phone call to the Ukrainian president. And what it has “unleashed” is a wholly partisan push to do what the Democrats have wanted to do for years – throw Trump out of the White House because they despise him.
All of these liberals championing the rise of the Deep State would have been outraged if such a scheme had been aimed at Obama. Charges of intelligence community corruption and racism would be all over the pages of the New York Times and the Washington Post. We would hear consistent cries of fear over the death of democracy, and those cries would be justified.
We didn’t elect John McLaughlin. We didn’t elect Peter Strzok. We didn’t elect John Brennan, Jim Clapper, or James Comey. We sure as hell didn’t elect Eric Ciaramella. Yet the left is perfectly happy to have these people overrule the 2016 election if it means they can get rid of Trump. Someday, they will understand what a gross mistake they’ve made.
Unfortunately, by that time, the damage will have been done.
