Last summer, Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) was among the Republican lawmakers warming up for baseball practice in Alexandria, Virginia when a crazed leftist named James Hodgkinson came marching across the grass with a gun and opened fire on the gathering. Hodgkinson’s bloody rampage left Rep. Steve Scalise fighting for his life for weeks in the hospital; only by the grace of God and the sharp presence of Capitol Police did Paul and others escape that terrible situation with their lives.
Only a few months later, Paul was brutally attacked by his neighbor, 59-year-old self-avowed socialist Rene Boucher, and sent to the hospital with several broken ribs and a serious lung injury. Though a U.S. District Court Judge has since ruled that the Pearl Harbor attack was based on a neighborly dispute and had nothing to do with politics, many who know both Paul and Boucher have disputed this characterization of what went down in Bowling Green.
And now, for the third time inside a year, Paul has come face to face with the deadly madness of the far left.
In an interview with the local ABC affiliate, Paul revealed that a man had been arrested for making vicious, graphic threats to the senator and his family.
“Capitol Police have issued an arrest warrant for a man who threatened to kill me and chop up my family with an axe,” he said Monday. “So, I mean, it’s just horrendous that we’re having to deal with things like this — that on top of being attacked personally, having a very serious, life-threatening basically attack on my person, and then being shot at, I’ve had a year where it’s just becoming more and more aware that we have these real threats out there.”
Mercury News reported that the suspect was a Democrat from Berkeley named Nathanial Blaine Luffman, who left voicemails with the senator’s office warning Paul that he would “gut you like a hog” and leave “your kids’ bowels splayed out across floor blood spattered on the door as you lay dead.” So yeah, not someone who is playing with a full deck.
But then, this is exactly the kind of person we’ve been sounding the alarm about. If every left-winger were a regular, normal-functioning adult, it wouldn’t be particularly dangerous for people like Mad Maxine to issue a call to action like she did last week. The problem isn’t your average, everyday Facebook ranter, the problem is people like Luffman who don’t know the difference between protesting and shooting. We can’t necessarily keep people like that from being out there, but we can avoid riling them up with outrageous, extremist rhetoric.
