In a White House roundtable discussion about sanctuary cities, Acting ICE Director Tom Homan said that sanctuary policies in California and around the country were a gift to the drug cartels of Mexico as well as unscrupulous U.S. employers who were boosting their profits by hiring illegal immigrants willing to work for less.
“These policies are being used by criminal organizations in Mexico and Central America,” Homan said on Tuesday. “It’s a selling tactic for them to get the smuggled aliens to a sanctuary jurisdiction, where even local law enforcement won’t cooperate with ICE, thereby bankrolling the very criminal organizations that smuggle these aliens, or bankrolling the very criminal organizations that have killed Border Patrol agents and special agents. Further, sanctuary laws help employers to exploit illegal workers with low wages and poor working conditions.”
Homan then addressed a campaign on the left that was trying to make Americans believe that his agency wanted local police to act as de facto deputies for Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
“I want to be clear on sanctuary policies,” he said. “ICE isn’t asking local law enforcement to be ICE officers. We don’t want them out making vehicle stops, asking immigration questions. What we want them to do is give federal law enforcement officers unfettered access to a county jail to take custody of somebody that’s in the country illegally and yet commits a crime against a citizen of this country. It’s safer for the officers. It’s safer for the community.”
Homan said there was a disconnect in the logic among those telling his agency to prioritize the arrest and deportation of convicted criminals.
“We are told, on one hand, to focus our efforts on criminals, but those same folks that want us to focus on criminals don’t let us in the county jail,” he said. “It just defies logic – Concentrate on criminals, but don’t come into our county jail.”
Ah, but don’t be fooled. The left may say stuff like, “ICE should be focusing on criminals,” but that’s like saying, “Um, gays should be entitled to some kind of civil union.” It’s a smokescreen for their real belief, which is that ICE should not be deporting anyone at all. In fact, as a few Democrats have recently come right out and said recently, they don’t even believe that the agency should exist. They view any kind of immigration enforcement as a weapon of the RACIST STATE worthy of abolition.
Republicans who want to make little amnesty deals with the Democrats really ought to remember that. When it comes to the left’s agenda, Dreamers aren’t the endgame. They’re only the very beginning.
