Over the past week, we’ve seen observers – some with absolutely no evidence at all – blame everyone from President Donald Trump to Capitol Police officers for what happened last Wednesday. Conspiracy theories have run amok, many of them tinged with more than a sprinkling of partisan rage. But even with all of this blather flying through the air, we haven’t seen anyone go as far as Rep. Mikie Sherill (D-NJ), who said in a Facebook video on Tuesday that she believes Republican lawmakers actively helped rioters perform “reconnaissance” the day before the riot.
In the video, Sherill said she would make sure that those Republicans who aided and abetted the rioters beforehand were held “responsible.”
“I also intend to see that those members of Congress who abetted [Trump], those members of Congress who had groups coming through the capitol that I saw on Jan. 5 for reconnaissance for the next day. Those members of Congress who incited the violent crowd. Those members of Congress that attempted to help our president undermine our democracy, I’m going see that they’re held accountable,” Sherrill said.
Despite Facebook (apparently) having very strict rules about posting falsehoods and unproven conspiracy theories, the social media giant has apparently taken no steps to censor Rep. Sherill or tag her video with a fact check.
Not only is there no evidence to support Sherill’s unacceptable accusation, the very idea that Republican lawmakers would do such a thing defies belief. For one thing, these lawmakers knew that they would be in session the following day. And the nature of a violent siege is that innocent people get hurt. Even if they had some idea that these rioters were on “their side,” there was far from any guarantee that they wouldn’t be hurt themselves.
But this accusation is so idiotic and absurd, we can’t even believe we’re taking the time to explain why. Rep. Sherill should be called to the House floor and asked to state her accusations in clear, specific language and provide whatever evidence she has to prove that these Republicans were doing what she’s claiming they did. When she refuses to do either (because she can’t), she should be censured by the full House of Representatives.
As for Facebook, if they really want to avoid accusations that they are playing favorites, they should take down Sherill’s video and post a tag explaining that the claim is completely false.
We don’t expect any of this to happen, mind you. Just pointing out what would happen if these leftists actually gave a damn about fairness and truth.
