Nunes: FBI Leaders Were “Used” by Russian Disinformation Campaign

In a harsh reply to news that the FBI opened a counter-intelligence investigation against President Donald Trump in the wake of Director James Comey’s 2017 dismissal, Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) accused Bureau leaders of working – unwittingly or otherwise – in the service of Russian disinformation. Blaming intelligence authorities for relying too heavily on the discredited dossier, Nunes said that the FBI had done incalculable harm to both the Bureau and the country with their politically-motivated witch hunt into the president.

“This is yet more evidence that FBI leaders actually had no real evidence against the Trump team,” Nunes told the Washington Examiner on Saturday. “Instead, they were simply trying to undermine a president they didn’t like and avenge Comey’s firing. By relying on the Steele dossier—a fraudulent document funded by Democrats and based on Russian sources—FBI leaders were either complicit or too oblivious to notice they were being used in a disinformation campaign.”

According to a New York Times story from Friday, the FBI opened a new investigation into President Trump in the immediate aftermath of Comey’s firing. The story, which quotes several former FBI agents, goes that leaders in the Bureau were sufficiently spooked by some of Trump’s actions after the firing that they questioned whether or not he was in service of the Russian government. These actions included mentioning the Russia investigation as a partial reason for Comey’s firing in an NBC interview with Lester Holt. They were also reportedly disturbed by Trump speaking to top Russian officials in the Oval Office about his decision to send Comey packing.

The article does not say whether or not the FBI ever found any evidence to support their hypothesis, but the fact that it hasn’t come out in the year-and-a-half since would seem to indicate otherwise. Unless, of course, you believe that our intelligence community would discover that our President is a Russian puppet and then just sit back and allow him to keep working for Moscow. Seems, shall we say, rather unlikely?

What we really find fascinating about this “bombshell” is the timing. It would seem to suggest that Democrats are getting nervous about the shutdown standoff, would it not? They didn’t run with this story back during the midterms, when it would have seemingly made a lot of sense to try and discredit Trump in any way possible. So they were obviously sitting on this until they felt the need to strike a big political blow. Could it be that the Democrats are watching their “moral” stance on the wall fall flat with the American people? Is this their swing-for-the-fences attempt to shift the narrative?

Very interesting. And, of course, very disheartening and disturbing to see our national intelligence apparatus used for this kind of grandstanding.
