Fresh off one of the most pathetic, doomed presidential campaigns of all time, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is facing down a firing squad in his hometown. After perpetrators attacked two Bronx police officers within one 12-hour window, rising tensions between the NYPD and the mayor’s office reached a fever pitch. So much so that the Sergeants Benevolent Association – a union of approximately 13,000 active and retired NYPD sergeants – said they were officially going to “war” with de Blasio.
“Mayor DeBlasio, the members of the NYPD are declaring war on you! We do not respect you, DO NOT visit us in hospitals,” the SBA tweeted. “You sold the NYPD to the vile creatures, the 1% who hate cops but vote for you. NYPD cops have been assassinated because of you. This isn’t over, Game on!”
“Police are being targeted,” the SBA wrote in a follow-up tweet. “The anti cop tone infecting our city & state is causing bloodshed. Before any public official sends their thoughts & prayers, they should ask themselves how the language & behavior they’ve been tolerating has contributed to violence against police.”
De Blasio’s relationship with the cops in New York has been strained for several years. With the new attacks – which NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea referred to as a “premeditated assassination attempt” – it was no surprise to see the conflict spill out into the public eye once again. This was ever more true when the mayor released a statement insisting that “anyone who spews hatred at our officers is aiding and abetting this kind of atmosphere.”
That statement was a bridge too far for the SBA and other pro-police groups in New York. They immediately criticized de Blasio for spreading the exact kind of hatred that he’s warning others against. They say that new NYC laws that limit cash bail and crack down on stop-and-frisk techniques have only worsened the atmosphere for police and made it easier for crooks to thrive.
On Fox News Monday morning, the president’s son, prominent NYC resident Eric Trump, said that de Blasio was guilty of failing to support his cops.
“You have officers out on the street, having big buckets of water and other things thrown at them, and, guess what leadership does, they do absolutely nothing,” Trump said. “[De Blasio] allows them to get beat up; he allows them to get assaulted and he takes away their rights and every single time they arrest somebody because they are a bad guy, he ends up investigating them and throwing them in jail and calling them racist and calling them this and that. It has got to stop.”
Say what you will about Rudy Giuliani and Michael Bloomberg and their supposedly-racist policies, but this kind of crap didn’t happen on their watch. You put a commie like de Blasio in office, and suddenly the wheels come off the bus. Let it be a lesson to the nation.
