When President Obama talks illegal immigration, he never fails to pose it as a moral imperative. On one memorable occasion, he even drew allusions to the plight of Mary and Joseph. It is our duty as Americans, he says, to make sure we care for those who come to our country looking for a better life. And as part of his campaign for amnesty, he draws on the best and brightest examples to influence the American people. The college bound. The exceptional. The extraordinary.
But underneath these cherry-picked examples is the scum. The evil. The people Donald Trump was talking about when he inspired a business-killing controversy. And though Obama claims that the point of amnesty is to allow immigration enforcement officials to focus resources on these criminals, it has yet to be proven that this tradeoff is workable.
Consider Edgar Covarrubias-Padilla. This is an illegal immigrant who was granted amnesty under Obama’s 2012 executive action. He’s since been charged with child molestation and distribution of child pornography. He was back in court just this week, slapped with two additional felony charges of lewd and lascivious acts with a minor under 14 years of age.
Worse, there are indications that Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials may have known that Covarrubias-Padilla was being investigated when his amnesty went through.
“These allegations are deeply troubling because, if true, they suggest that DHS was aware for months or years that Mr. Covarrubias-Padilla posed a public safety threat to the children he was monitoring, yet took no action to revoke his DACA authorization,” read a letter sent by Senator Chuck Grassley.
We Have Enough Criminals
This country has enough criminals without letting them come in through the southern border. If the past year has taught us anything, it’s that we have work to do when it comes to ensuring the safety of our communities. Until we can solve those domestic problems, maybe we need to keep criminals from flowing into the country.
Liberals were aghast when Trump shot to the top of the polls, but this is exactly why it happened. Americans are sick of watching this country go to the dogs under President Obama. Were Trump’s comments meant to incite? Yes. Were they rude? Sure. But conservatives are willing to forgive these sins if it means we’re finally going to get serious about enforcing the law. Better a polite president or an effective one?
Obama is sacrificing the security of the United States for political purposes. Ask Kate Steinle’s parents if they think Trump is too rude or brash or racist to be president. Ask them if they would prefer unrestrained immigration.
We need some good old fashioned American toughness to tackle this problem. It’s not inhumane to look after your own. What’s inhumane is allowing children to be molested and exploited so you can pick up a few votes.
