At a Martin Luther King Jr. forum in New York City on Monday, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) went on record to say that if the world were a moral place, there would be no such thing as a billionaire.
Asked by host Ta-Nehisi Coates if “a world that allows for billionaires is a moral outcome,” Ocasio-Cortez was emphatic.
“No it’s not,” she said. “It’s not.”
While she conceded that she does not believe that all billionaires – “like Bill Gates, for example, or Warren Buffett are immoral people,” she said that it was still symptomatic of a sick system that allowed individuals to grow so wealthy.
“I’m not saying that, but I do think a system that allows billionaires to exist when there are parts of Alabama where people are still getting ringworm because they don’t have access to public health is wrong,” she said. “I think that it’s wrong that a vast majority of the country does not make a living great wage. I think it’s wrong that you can work 100 hours and not feed your kids. I think it’s wrong that corporations like Walmart and Amazon can get paid.”
You think it’s wrong that Walmart and Amazon can get paid? Why, exactly, would these corporations exist if they weren’t getting paid? Or perhaps Ocasio-Cortez would rather they didn’t exist.
Which probably gets closer to the true mark than even she would admit on her most brain-dead day. Ocasio-Cortez is a socialist. Don’t let the phony “democratic” part of that claimed title fool you. She doesn’t want democratic socialism, she wants pure, unadulterated socialism. She wants government to level the playing field, and that means – necessarily – doing away with most of the private sector. It means putting barriers in place that prevent people from making an enormous financial success of their lives. Why? Because some people can’t get it done. Therefore, we have to spread that wealth around.
We do this by eating up the free market and imposing government will in its way.
We do this by taxing millionaires and billionaires until it is no longer possible to become such a thing.
We do this by changing the entire landscape of the nation until politicians in Washington have control over what you do, what you say, and how you live your life.
People like Ocasio-Cortez think, quite plainly, that they know better what you need than YOU know what you need.
And they are willing to take away your freedom to choose.
