According to Democrat pollster Mark Penn, a man who was instrumental in assisting the presidential campaign of both Bill and Hillary Clinton, the Democrats are off the page when it comes to many facets of illegal immigration. In an interview with The Hill, Penn said that Democrats were especially out of touch with the American people as it pertained to sanctuary cities. Penn said that according to the polling he was looking at, the vast majority of the public is opposed to cities that thwart federal law to protect illegal immigrant residents.
“I asked them, ‘Do you think notifying ICE would in fact increase crime because it would inhibit people from reporting crimes,’” he told The Hill. “’Or does it decrease crime because it takes criminals off the street?’ Overwhelmingly, they said decrease.”
In fact, Penn said that 84% of Americans believe that cities should turn cooperate with federal immigration authorities and turn over arrested illegal aliens for deportation.
“When someone’s arrested, the public expects someone will notify federal immigration authorities just as they would expect someone who violates state tax law will find out that they notified the IRS,” Penn said.
Obviously! OBVIOUSLY! We’ve heard (and made) the anti-sanctuary argument dozens of times, but we’re not sure we’ve ever heard it put quite this perfectly. The way Penn says it, you once again have to wonder what the hell Democrats are thinking with these policies. Like, you can kind of understand that they want to reach out to (a subset of) Hispanic voters. And you can kind of see that they have a long-term plan in mind where they’ll be able to turn these illegal immigrants into Democrat voters. But how can they possibly think that shielding criminals from justice is a winning issue at election time? Even Obama, with as out-of-touch as he was on illegal immigration, knew that sanctuary cities were the wrong way to go.
Penn’s figures come as the Trump Justice Department is beginning to expand its efforts to eradicate sanctuary policies around the country. On Thursday, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced that four new grant programs would be available to those cities that can prove they are in compliance with federal immigration law. If cities want to access the new federal money, they will have to certify that their officials will allow ICE officers in their jails and notify federal authorities when they have an illegal immigrant in custody.
“So-called ‘sanctuary’ policies make all of us less safe because they intentionally undermine our laws and protect illegal aliens who have committed crimes,” said Sessions.
It would seem that the vast majority of Americans agree.
