According to a new report from Fox News, the Department of Homeland Security is withholding the real numbers on illegal immigration, leaving lawmakers with misleading statistics that make the country’s border look more secure than it really is.
According to DHS officials, border security agents successfully apprehend roughly half of all adults who try to sneak across the Mexican border into the United States.
But sources told Fox News that a November DHS report – unseen by either the public or Congress – put the number closer to 80%.
“It erodes the trust as to whether the administration is being honest with the American people about what the threat is,” said House Rep. Martha McSally, a Republican member of the Committee on Homeland Security. “This should not be a partisan issue. Democrats, Independents, and Republicans in my community want to make sure that border communities are safe.”
Fox News reports that the DHS figures were requested by both Senate and House appropriations committees last year, but they have since “been shrouded in secrecy.”
“Viewed by a select few in key administration positions, critics say it is being withheld because of its explosive findings, which could potentially benefit GOP nominee Donald Trump,” reports Fox News.
If that’s the case, we need a serious congressional inquiry into the holdup at the DHS. At the very least, Congress deserves to see this report so they can decide for themselves whether it is as explosive as the Fox News sources claim that it is. This goes beyond the 2016 election; how can Congress appropriate budgetary funds if they don’t even have the latest, up-to-date figures on illegal immigration? As McSally said, this shouldn’t be a partisan issue. This speaks to the fundamental integrity of the federal government. Are they actually working in Washington, or has this whole mess just become one big political game?
As if we really needed to ask.
“It appears to me that this research could have been suppressed because it contradicts the Obama administration’s narrative that the border is secure, and it contradicts the administration’s wish for people to believe that illegal immigration is a thing of the past,” said Jessica Vaughan of the Center for Immigration Studies.
It used to be the job of the media to find those contradictions and relay them to the public. Now it seems only Fox News is up to the job. For everyone else, it’s just a guessing game.
