It’s bad enough that schools are telling their students what they can and can’t wear in the hallways of the brick-and-mortar buildings, but it’s quite another for them to start telling them what kinds of messages they can display in their own homes. That’s exactly what happened to a 16-year-old student at Colusa High School in California, however.
According to ABC 10, the student was told that he would be removed from a virtual chemistry class if he didn’t take down a “Trump 2020” campaign flag from the wall of his bedroom.
According to the boy’s mother, the boy took himself out of the Zoom class before he could be forcibly removed by the teacher.
“I made it very clear that when he repositioned the camera, either the flag needed to be removed or not in the background or she was kicking him out, and she gave him 15 seconds,” the mother said.
The teacher, at that point, actually did begin to count to 15.
“At first I was furious,” the boy’s mother told the local news. “With the distance learning we are all forced to do because of the new color chart, the school district has not addressed the students’ rights in their own home to the teachers or to us as parents.”
As related by The Daily Wire, however, it’s clear that the Colusa Unified School District has different ideas about freedom of expression than the teacher in question.
According to their handbook: “The Governing Board believes that free inquiry and exchange of ideas are essential parts of a democratic education. The Board respects students’ rights to express ideas and opinions, take stands on issues, and support causes, even when such speech is controversial or unpopular.
“Students,” the handbook continues, “shall have the right to exercise freedom of speech and of the press including, but not limited to, the use of bulletin boards; the distribution of printed materials or petitions; the wearing of buttons, badges, or insignia, and the right of expression in official publication.”
According to the boy’s mother, the teacher has since apologized for taking a hard line against the Trump 2020 flag. There was no update, however, on whether or not the student would be allowed to keep displaying the flag IN HIS OWN BEDROOM during subsequent Zoom classes.
Anyone want to bet whether any of this would have happened if the kid had been displaying a Black Lives Matter flag?
