According to House Republicans who have reviewed a new batch of anti-Trump text messages exchanged by the FBI’s Gruesome Twosome, Peter Strzok and Lisa Page, the two disgraced officials actually talked about convening a “secret society” of opposition FBI agents the day after Trump’s election. While the new batch of texts have not yet leaked in full to the media, lawmakers privy to their contents say they are more disturbed than ever about what was actually going on in the FBI as Trump ascended to the presidency in 2016.
This is not the first time, of course, that Strzok and Page have made headlines. Strzok was removed from Robert Mueller’s investigative team last August for reasons that were undisclosed at the time. Months later, it was revealed that he had been exchanging text messages with Page, an FBI lawyer with whom he was having an extramarital affair. In those messages, both Strzok and Page spoke derisively of Trump while hoping fervently that Hillary Clinton would be the next president. This might not have attracted much scrutiny were it not for the fact that Strzok was one of the top investigators in both the Hillary Clinton email case and the Trump/Russia inquiry.
According to two Republican congressmen, Trey Gowdy of South Carolina and John Ratcliffe of Texas, the new messages only strengthen the possibility that a treasonous conspiracy was (is?) underway in the halls of the FBI.
“We learned today about information that in the immediate aftermath of the election, that there may have been a secret society of folks within the Department of Justice and the FBI — to include Page and Strzok — that would be working against him,” Ratcliffe said in Fox News interview. “I’m not saying that actually happened, but when folks speak in those terms, they need to come forward to explain the context with which they used those terms.”
Gowdy, who joined Ratcliffe for the interview, said he was disturbed by the new revelations.
“There’s a text exchange between these two FBI agents, these two supposed to be objective fact-centric FBI agents, saying that perhaps this is the first meeting of the ‘secret society,’” he said. “So of course I’m going to want to know what secret society you’re talking about because you’re supposed to be investigating objectively the person who just won the Electoral College. So yeah, I’m going to want to know.”
Democrats are accusing their colleagues across the aisle of waging a counter-influence campaign by casting doubts on the Trump/Russia investigation, but you can just IMAGINE what they would be saying if the shoe were on the other foot. A central FBI agent and his mistress badmouthing Hillary and forming a “secret society” to take down her presidency? They would be apoplectic! The fact that they are waving their hands and pretending like this is just meaningless conspiracy-theory nonsense makes them complicit in the wrongdoing. If they were serious about getting to the truth of this investigation, they would be just as troubled by these texts as Republicans.
Of course, that implies that the Adam Schiffs of the world aren’t an active part of the conspiracy, and we’re not ready to rule that out.
