President Donald Trump issued a remarkable speech on Saturday, giving Democrats a whole barrel of surprising immigration concessions, in return for which he made the same ask of $5.7 billion for the funding of the border wall.
Proving that he is highly interested in ending the shutdown, compromising with Democrats, and negotiating a true end to the crisis at the border, Trump offered a deal that risked making his base of hardline supporters nervous, if not angry. This was Trump at his “Art of the Deal” best, and it gave Democrats a golden opportunity to prove that they actually aren’t the open-borders lunatics they’ve been accused of being.
Instead of taking that opportunity, Democrats in the leadership called the offer a “non-starter.”
Trump’s proposal includes offering a three-year protection amnesty for the 700,000 members of Obama’s DACA program, giving the courts and the legislature plenty of time to figure out a permanent solution for the so-called Dreamers. Additionally, it would extend protections for the immigrants currently enrolled in the Temporary Protected Status program, which the Trump administration had previously considered rolling back.
These are significant concessions, considering the fact that Trump is not even asking for the entire wall’s worth of funding. Nor is he remaining fixed on the concrete version of the wall that he originally pursued. This is a Democrat gift-bag intended to end this shutdown and get things rolling again in Washington.
And they rejected it out of hand.
“It is unlikely that any one of these provisions alone would pass the House, and taken together, they are a non-starter,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said in a statement. “For one thing, this proposal does not include the permanent solution for the Dreamers and TPS recipients that our country needs and supports.”
The naysayers in the Democratic Party and the media (to the extent that there is any difference in these two entities) are now running around saying it was an “unserious” proposal in the first place. Unserious? These idiots do not understand what a slap in the face this was to immigration hardliners, who do not want to see amnesty materialize in any way, shape, or form. Frankly, we at The Mad Patriots don’t want that, either, but we recognize that the reality of the situation is that Trump will have to give SOMETHING if he wants to solve this crisis. And extended protections are not exactly amnesty (although we wouldn’t be surprised if that suggestion is around the corner).
But it’s a moot point if Democrats aren’t willing to consider voting for the wall for any reason. At this point, Trump might just have to go the national emergency route and let the chips fall where they may. If Democrats want to hang themselves on the cross and crucify themselves on behalf of illegal immigrants, let them. It doesn’t mean we have to let them destroy the country in the meantime.
