Despite metric tons of criticism raining down on him for his supposedly racist tweets against Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, and the rest of the Democratic “Squad” in the House, President Donald Trump proved on Sunday that he had absolutely no intention of backing down. Trump said, in fact, that if anyone were to apologize, it should be the progressive lawmakers for what they’ve said about this country.
“I don’t believe the four Congresswomen are capable of loving our country,” Trump wrote. “They should apologize to America (and Israel) for the horrible (hateful) things they have said. They are destroying the Democrat Party, but are weak & insecure people who can never destroy our great Nation!”
Trump also took aim at the Washington Post, which recently made public their editorial decision to label Trump’s tweets against the Squad as “racist” in their straight news reporting.
“The Washington Post Story, about my speech in North Carolina and tweet, with its phony sources who do not exist, is Fake News,” Trump tweeted. “The only thing people were talking about is the record setting crowd and the tremendous enthusiasm, far greater than the Democrats. You’ll see in 2020!”
Trump said that the Post’s coverage of his tweets and the “send her back” chant at the rally amounted to “presidential harassment.”
Trump, of course, knows exactly what he’s doing, and the media/Democratic Party is falling right into the trap. Far from using racism as a strategic weapon against the left, Trump is baiting the Democrats into doing so. You’d think, given the outcome of the 2016 election, that this would be a trap the left could smell coming, but they simply can’t resist that delicious smell of identity politics. If they can get up on their racism bandwagon, they aren’t going to pass up the opportunity.
It’s a huge mistake. The vast majority of Americans do not think this way. They don’t walk around in their lives concerned about their white privilege or about whether or not they are “woke” enough. Many Americans – and this goes even beyond Republicans and Trump supporters – really do believe in the “love it or leave it” mindset. That doesn’t mean you can’t criticize the country or fiercely criticize the government, obviously. But it does mean there should be an underlying respect for democracy, our nation’s history, and the patriots who came before us. The Squad has none of that.
If the Democrats choose to run with this whole Good Guys vs. The Racists feud next year, it’s going to be Deplorables 2.0.
But hey, who are we to dissuade them?
