In statements from both the White House and President Donald Trump himself, the administration blasted a court ruling in San Francisco that blocked the president’s executive order that threatens to withhold federal grant money from sanctuary cities. As a result of the injunction, Trump is not allowed to take these funds from cities who refuse to comply with federal immigration authorities.
“Once again, a single district judge — this time in San Francisco — has ignored federal immigration law to set a new immigration policy for the entire country,” the White House said in a statement. “San Francisco, and cities like it, are putting the well-being of criminal aliens before the safety of our citizens, and those city officials who authored these policies have the blood of dead Americans on their hands.”
On Twitter, Trump also rejected the ruling: “First the Ninth Circuit rules against the ban & now it hits again on sanctuary cities-both ridiculous rulings. See you in the Supreme Court!”
In the ruling, U.S. District Judge William Orrick determined that the president’s executive order – signed on January 25 – was in violation of the Constitution. According to Orrick, cities that challenge Trump’s order are likely to succeed because the order appears to violate both the Fifth and Tenth Amendments. He said that his injunction therefore applies not only to the specific parties involved in the case – San Francisco and Santa Clara County – but to all sanctuary cities threatened by the administration.
“These constitutional violations are not limited to San Francisco or Santa Clara, but apply equally to all states and local jurisdictions,” Orrick said.
“This case is yet one more example of egregious overreach by a single, unelected district judge,” the White House statement said. “Today’s ruling undermines faith in our legal system and raises serious questions about circuit shopping.”
On Twitter, Trump noted that somehow his cases always wind up in front of the most liberal courts in the country.
“Out of our very big country, with many choices, does everyone notice that both the ‘ban’ case and now the ‘sanctuary’ case is brought in the Ninth Circuit, which has a terrible record of being overturned (close to 80%). They used to call this ‘judge shopping!’ Messy system,” he wrote.
It is peculiar, but that’s the way it is. No one is fooled by this ruling and its politically motivated causes. Either these cases will be overturned by the Supreme Court, or we will become a country that is no longer ruled by law. We will instead be ruled by liberal tears, which have been flowing nonstop since the election of Donald Trump. Those tears won’t protect minorities from harassment, and they certainly won’t protect our nation from terrorism and illegal immigration. Let’s pray that when these cases finally reach a court with some semblance of judicial legitimacy, sanity will once again prevail and the rights of actual American citizens will be upheld.
