According to a new Pew Research Center review of State Department data, the first six months of President Trump’s tenure in the White House has been characterized by a stunning and long-overdue turnaround of Barack Obama’s shocking discrimination against Christian refugees. Trump, who criticized his predecessor for treating persecuted Christians “horribly” through his refugee acceptance program, has turned the tide spectacularly, proving that Christians being killed and enslaved by Islamist extremists once again have a friend in the United States of America.
The research data shows that from January 2017 through the end of June, “9.598 Christian refugees arrived in the U.S., compared with 7,250 Muslim refugees. Christians made up 50% of all refugee arrivals in this period, compared with 38% who are Muslim.” The data goes on to show that of the more than 12,000 Syrian refugees that were admitted to the U.S. through the same time period last year, 99% of them were Muslim. Less than 1% were Christian. And while Syria has a sharply imbalanced religious demography, it isn’t THAT imbalanced. Christians make up between 5 and 10 percent of the population, meaning the Obama administration undershot any reasonable target to a degree that can’t be dismissed as chance.
After years of intense pressure, Secretary of State John Kerry finally admitted publicly last year that ISIS was guilty of committing genocide against Christians and other non-Muslim minorities in the Middle East. Yet this long-overdue admission changed nothing in terms of who Obama allowed into the U.S. And when confronted with the mere thought of taking a different approach, the former president bristled.
“When I hear political leaders suggesting that there would be a religious test for which person who’s fleeing from a war-torn country is admitted, that’s shameful,” Obama said. “That’s not American, it’s not who we are.”
But a religious test, as borne out by the numbers, was EXACTLY what the Obama administration was placing on inbound refugees. The program was overwhelmingly bent towards not just Muslims, but SUNNI Muslims – the exact sect of Islam responsible for such groups as ISIS and Al Qaeda. At a time when Republicans like Donald Trump were urging the president to learn the lesson of San Bernardino and amp up the country’s vetting process, Obama was blissfully ensconced in ignorance. Well, ignorance or something much more dastardly.
Thankfully, things have changed dramatically. And once the 120-day refugee restriction has ended, we are certain that President Trump will keep reaching out to these persecuted Christians and restoring America’s place in the world as a beacon of hope for followers of the Cross.
