Democrats are undoubtedly beside themselves with the news that President Trump will nominate Rep. John Ratcliffe (R-TX) to replace outgoing Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats. Not only was Coats one of the left’s most impenetrable stalwarts inside the intelligence community, shielding the wrongdoers from the long arm of justice, but his replacement comes to the job knowing exactly what must be done. He proved in his examination of Robert Mueller last week (which Trump reportedly loved) that he has a thorough understanding of just what a witch hunt the Russia investigation really was.
“The special counsel’s job,” said Ratcliffe in the hearing. “Nowhere does it say that you were to conclusively determine Donald Trump’s innocence or that the special counsel report should determine whether or not to exonerate him.”
This exchange was duly ignored by the mainstream media, and there’s little reason to wonder why. In a single sentence, Ratcliffe undermined the Democrats’ entire argument for impeachment. They have latched on to Mueller’s refusal to “exonerate” the president on obstruction of justice, simply because they now know that collusion is a dead end. But Ratcliffe is exactly right; it wasn’t Mueller’s job to determine Trump’s “innocence,” just as it is never a prosecutor’s job to do so. They either bring charges against the subject or they don’t. Mueller didn’t. Case closed.
Ratcliffe’s willingness to state the blunt truth about the Mueller circus was impressive. Even more impressive is what he said on Fox News this weekend, telling host Maria Bartiromo that getting to the bottom of the Obama administration’s misdeeds was of paramount importance.
“I think the first thing we need to do is make sure we don’t do what the Democrats have done,” Ratcliffe said. “They accused Donald Trump of a crime and then they try and reverse engineer a process to justify that accusation. So I’m not going to accuse any specific person of any specific crime, I just want there to be a fair process to get there. What I do know as a former federal prosecutor is that it does appear that there were crimes committed during the Obama administration.”
For more than two years, Coats has stood in the way of Trump and the Justice Department’s attempts to investigate the investigators. Meanwhile, he has undermined the administration on everything from North Korea to Iran. How he stuck around for so long is anyone’s guess, but with Trump ready to give back as good as he got, Coats is the first to go.
If Democrats aren’t sweating yet, they don’t understand what’s coming.
