In a feud that has everyone on the left once again screaming about President Trump and his supposed racism, the president and basketball superstar LeBron James have been trading insults for the past week. The trouble started when James appeared on CNN with host Don Lemon to discuss his new charity school in Ohio; the conversation, naturally, turned to the state of politics and James’ opinions about the president.
“Trump is dividing us and what I’ve noticed over the last few months is that he’s used sport to divide us,” he said. “And that’s something that I can’t relate to because I know that sport was the first time I ever was around someone white and I got the opportunity to see them and learn about them and they got an opportunity to learn about me and we became very good friends. Sports has never been something that divides people, it’s always been something that brings someone together.”
Asked by Don Lemon what he would say to Trump if he were sitting in front of him, the Lakers star said, “I would never sit across from him. No.”
To put the icing on the cake, he added: “I would sit across from Barack, though.”
As far as we can tell, no media outlet or pundit called LeBron James a racist for saying he would sit across from a black president but not a white one.
But they rushed to their keyboards and cameras when Trump shot back on Twitter.
“Lebron James was just interviewed by the dumbest man on television, Don Lemon,” Trump wrote. “He made Lebron look smart, which isn’t easy to do. I like Mike!”
We particularly loved that last part, which was essentially James’ receipt for the Barack remark. But that didn’t stop everyone and their brother from calling Trump a racist for the comeback; as we’ve learned over the past few years, of course, it is ALWAYS racist when a white person criticizes a black person, no matter what the context. Oh wait, there is one exception: If you’re a liberal white person criticizing a conservative black person, the race thing is canceled out and it becomes okay again. Funny how it all works, isn’t it?
The truth is, of course, that it is people like LeBron James and the kneeling NFL stars who are using their sports platform to divide America. No one asked them to politicize their respective games. No one asked to be forced to choose sides in the anthem debate. No one wanted the gridiron or the basketball court to become a place for political/racial protests. It is people like LeBron who have suddenly made a thing out of not accepting invitations to the White House. It’s athletes like King James who have gone out of their way to bash this president at every opportunity.
Trump has done nothing more or less than respond in kind.
