When the Missouri legislature overrode the state’s Democrat governor last week, making constitutional carry the law in one fell swoop, the New York Times Editorial Board decided they’d seen enough. If Republicans could so callously thwart Gov. Jay Nixon, then it was proof that gun control should be handled by our (uncompromised) federal government. Perhaps just Barack Obama himself.
Calling the vote a “wholesale retreat from gun safety in the state,” the Times editors said Missouri Republicans had done the unconscionable.
“The measure […] provides further evidence that gun safety cannot be left to state lawmakers beholden to the gun lobby,” they wrote. “Democrats opposed to the Missouri bill called it a ‘perfect storm’ of lowered standards for the use of deadly force and an invitation for people to be armed without responsible controls.”
The Times went on to lay out a laundry list of liberal objections to Missouri’s new status as a constitutional carry state, including: It would hurt “communities of color,” it would let people with a criminal record carry concealed weapons, it would endanger those in a domestic violence situation, and it would…well, just read this one for yourself:
Senator Maria Chappelle-Nadal warned that enacting the stand-your-ground standard would mean another “bad Samaritan like Zimmerman.” She was referring to the shooting death in Florida four years ago of Trayvon Martin, an unarmed black teenager, by George Zimmerman; in that case the judge’s instructions to the jury contained some of the language of the stand your ground law.
The editors actually had to go back in a correct this paragraph; the original version said that Zimmerman was acquitted due to Florida’s stand your ground law, which is a much-believed myth. Kudos to them for making the changes, but they should have also added a sentence to the effect of: “Trayvon Martin was beating Zimmerman to death when the victim shot him out of desperation.” But apparently, the liberal media’s not ready to concede that point just yet.
The editors forgot to actually make a point, instead ending on a sour note where they accuse Donald Trump of “pandering” to the NRA instead of leading on the issue of gun control.
But if anyone around here is doing any pandering, it is the Democrats. Still relying on lies and fictional statistics about gun violence, they are now trying to convince anyone who will listen that “constitutional carry” is a dangerous law. They don’t care one way or the other about Missouri’s law; they just want to rile up a nation of fearful Democrats with reckless propaganda. Vote for Hillary or the whole country is doomed to go out in a blaze of gunfire!
Liberals are selling a far-out proposition – that guns somehow turn ordinary people into murderers. But don’t think the idiocy of the argument will keep it from gaining traction. Guns can’t turn regular people into killers, but liberals can turn regular people into morons.
