Republicans have eagerly moved on from the health care debacle that threatened to drag Donald Trump’s presidency to the depths of the sea in the first half of 2017, and the repeal of the individual mandate as part of the tax bill has given them a little more breathing room politically. Alas, there is a danger of “half-fixing” the broken system known as Obamacare; not only are premiums still forcing people out of the health insurance market but it is leaving the door open for Democrats to come back over the top with their own new plan. And according to Politico, that plan is going to be some form of single-payer, universal healthcare.
Single-payer health care is gaining ground among Democrats.
In a sign of the party’s move to the left on the issue, the Center for American Progress (CAP), a bastion of the Democratic establishment, this week released a plan that comes very close to a single-payer system.
That’s a dramatic change from just two years ago, when Hillary Clinton — tied closely to CAP — dismissed Sen. Bernie Sanders’s (I-Vt.) push of “Medicare for all” as politically unrealistic.
The CAP plan, called “Medicare Extra for All,” would provide government-run health insurance for everyone, though people would still have the option of obtaining coverage from an employer.
In another sign of the increased prominence of single-payer among Democrats, many lawmakers seen as top contenders for the party’s presidential nomination in 2020, including Sens. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), Cory Booker (D-N.J.), and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), are backing Sanders’s latest Medicare for all bill.
The site spoke to former Senate staffer Jim Manley, who said, “I think it’s pretty clear that this is where we are going as a party. The party as a whole is becoming much more liberal.”
You don’t say.
We’re a little surprised that Democrats aren’t keeping this under wraps until after the midterms, since any switch to state-controlled universal healthcare would automatically mean an enormous increase in taxes. If they’re going to run on a higher tax platform while Republicans are out there touting the benefits of their shiny new cuts…well, all we can say is good luck with that. We don’t care if Trump is tried and hanged for treason as a last-minute October surprise, the Democrats aren’t going to win back Congress by stealing fresh money out of the pockets of the American people. Single-payer will bring out their do-nothing base, but it isn’t going to win over independents and Trump-wary Republicans.
To be honest, this is good news for anyone who wants to see the Democrats stay out of power in Washington. The fact that they believe that voters are craving policies that are MORE liberal than those of the Obama years shows that they have absolutely no read on the Clinton loss. They still think Bernie “What Russians?” Sanders is the future of the Democratic Party. Well, if they think the key to victory in 2018 and 2020 is to let college kids lead the way to the polls, Trump may as well get comfortable in the White House. He ain’t going anywhere.
