Joe Biden Proves to Be a Coward on Federal Abortion Funding

It only took a few days of blistering criticism from the left to knock Joe Biden off a position he’s held for nearly forty years. A longtime proponent of the Hyde amendment, a congressional measure that forbids taxpayer money from being spent on abortion except in certain emergency circumstances, Biden initially made waves last week when he told an ACLU activist that he was now in favor of repealing the rule. Then, a couple of weeks later, he affirmed that he still supported the Hyde amendment and that he’d simply misheard the activist’s question. And that’s when the pummeling began.

See, today’s extremist Democrats have no use for a presidential candidate who is not with them 100% on what we’re beginning to think is their most important cause: The right to abort a baby at will, with no exceptions and no financial limitations. Biden thinks (or thought) that it was unfair to compel millions of Americans who loathe abortion to support it with their tax dollars. But that reasonable position has no home in the modern Democratic Party, where “safe, legal, and rare” is about as quaint and outdated as “don’t ask, don’t tell.”

On Thursday, Biden told a DNC audience in Georgia that he no longer believed in the Hyde amendment.

“If I believe health care is a right, as I do, I can no longer support an amendment that makes that right dependent on someone’s zip code,” he said, absurdly.

So many things wrong with that. One, abortion isn’t health care. Two, what does one’s zip code have to do with taxpayers being forced to fund abortions through Medicaid? We suppose Biden is getting at the point that poor people live in certain places, blah blah blah, but it’s not as if there aren’t ample charitable opportunities for these people to take advantage of. To put it even more bluntly, it’s not as if poor people have had any trouble affording their abortions for the last fifty years.

At the end of the day, Biden’s lack of principles have managed to irritate voters on both sides of the abortion debate. Moderate Democrats are annoyed that their chosen candidate was so easily swayed by the activist left. The abortion-crazed feminists don’t feel like they can fully trust Biden, who flipped and flopped and flipped again in the span of a few days. And everyone else just saw this frontrunner for the calculated coward that he really is.

The Democratic primary race is Biden’s to lose. And if he keeps showing the country that he’s nothing more than a poll-tested, unprincipled vote-chaser, lose is exactly what he’s going to do.
