NatSec Advisor Robert O’Brien: The Coronavirus is China’s Chernobyl

In an interview with CBS’s “Face the Nation” on Sunday, White House National Security Adviser Robert O’Brien said that history will regard China’s response to the coronavirus outbreak through the same lens that we look at the Soviet Union’s response to the Chernobyl meltdown in the 1980s.

“This was a virus that was unleashed by China,” said O’Brien. “There was a coverup that someday they’re going to do an HBO show like they did with Chernobyl on this virus.”

O’Brien was referring to the miniseries “Chernobyl” that aired last year which chronicled the extent to which the Soviets went to keep the truth about the meltdown away from both the Russian people and the rest of the world. Certainly, if it can be proven that COVID-19 came about through a lab accident in Wuhan, the parallels would be undeniable. But even if it came from a wet market or through some idiot’s decision to eat a pangolin in the forest, the fact remains that Chinese leaders caused untold suffering and death with their refusal to be up front and honest about the disaster early on.

O’Brien continued with the comparison, telling viewers that Chinese officials had “kicked out all reporters and they wouldn’t let CDC investigators come in and they’re still stonewalling investigators.”

“It doesn’t matter if it was local officials or the Chinese Communist Party, it was a coverup and we’ll get to the bottom of it eventually,” he continued.

O’Brien said that China’s malfeasance was not finished, explaining that Beijing will undoubtedly take steps to try and steal a U.S.-developed vaccine if they get half the chance.

“There’s a chance, and it’s been reported, that the Chinese have been engaged in espionage to try to find the research and the technologies that we’re working on both for a vaccine and a therapy,” he said. “They’ve got a many-year history of stealing American intellectual property and knocking off American technology and I wouldn’t be surprised if they did that with the vaccines.”

Fact is, we’re in an election year, and it is more important than ever that we have American leadership that fully comprehends the economic, security, and yes, public health threat that China represents. Only one of the candidates fits that bill, and his name is Donald Trump. He was doing something about China long before the pandemic, while everyone on the other side was sticking up for the CCP and praising their form of commucapitalism and their increasing dominance of the global market. Joe Biden, to the extent that he isn’t actively compromised by his ties to China, just doesn’t get it.

And in the post-coronavirus world, that’s not a form of incompetence that we can accept.
