House Republicans are trying to pass a piece of legislation called the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, which would require hospitals and healthcare clinics to provide life-saving care for newborns who survive the abortion process. The legislation, which was introduced earlier this year after Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam made explosively casual remarks about letting those survivors die on the operating table, has thus far been blocked by House Democrats no fewer than 80 times.
Still, Republicans are hoping to gather enough signatures to bypass Nancy Pelosi and force Democrats to go on the record with their vote to keep this horrifying practice going (if not achieve a miracle and actually pass the bill, of course). To that end, they held a hearing this week during which registered nurse Jill Stanek testified to both the horror and the frequency of this national shame.
Stanek, who now serves as the campaign chair of the Susan B. Anthony List, told lawmakers of the time, 20 years ago, that she was working at Christ Hospital in Illinois and a baby with Down Syndrome survived the abortion procedure.
“In the event a baby was aborted alive, he or she received no medical assessments or care but was only given what my hospital called ‘comfort care,’” Stanek testified.
“One night, a nursing co-worker was transporting a baby who had been aborted because he had Down syndrome to our Soiled Utility Room to die – because that’s where survivors were taken,” she continued. “I could not bear the thought of this suffering child dying alone, so I rocked him for the 45 minutes that he lived. He was 21 to 22 weeks old, weighed about 1/2 pound, and was about the size of my hand. He was too weak to move very much, expending all his energy attempting to breathe. Toward the end he was so quiet I couldn’t tell if he was still alive unless I held him up to the light to see if his heart was still beating through his chest wall.
“After he was pronounced dead, I folded his little arms across his chest, wrapped him in a tiny shroud, and carried him to the hospital morgue where we took all our dead patients,” she finished.
Stanek’s story is a harrowing one, but it is far from unique. While the Democrats would love for the public to believe that these botched abortions are a rarity – that the situation that Stanek describes virtually never happens – the truth is that they are happening right now, all over the country. Some estimates say that as many as 20% of aborted fetuses with genetic defects survive for some period of time outside the womb. THAT is why Democrats don’t want to address this issue – not because it’s insignificant but because it is a regular occurrence.
For America to allow this horror to continue is an ongoing strike against our collective soul. And for Democrats to stand against this legislation…well, it tells you everything you need to know about who they are and what they represent.
