Some public health experts are speaking out against the federal government’s proposal to put the elderly at the front of the line for the new coronavirus vaccine. While seniors are much more likely to suffer the worst effects of COVID and thus would seem to be reasonable candidates for the first doses, these experts argue that essential workers should jump in front of them. Why? Because they are much more likely to be people of color, and the American elderly population is too white.
No, we’re not joking.
From Fox News:
Health care workers and long-term residents of nursing homes are first in line to receive the jab, but experts have yet to sort out who should be next. The Centers for Disease Control will soon issue a recommendation, after an independent panel of medical experts that advises the CDC votes on who to put forth for “Phase 1b.”
In a committee meeting last month, all voting members voted to put essential workers ahead of those 65 and older and those with medical conditions that put them in a high-risk category.
The committee typically relies on science to inform decisions, but this time, social justice concerns have come up as well.
Harald Schmidt, an expert in ethics and health policy at the University of Pennsylvania, told the New York Times essential workers should be prioritized over older adults because “Older populations are whiter.”
“Society is structured in a way that enables them to live longer. Instead of giving additional health benefits to those who already had more of them, we can start to level the playing field a bit.”
There are those who say that “cancel culture” critics and those who decry the woke left are making mountains out of molehills, but here we are with a real, tangible proposal that involves giving a life-saving vaccine to people of color first for no other reason than political correctness. And we’re sure there’s someone somewhere making the argument that transgender prostitutes should be next after them. And then we’ll give the vaccine to people on death row.
A few dozens phases later and maybe – maybe – we’ll get around to giving the vaccine to old white people. But only if they are registered Democrats.
From the start of the pandemic, the stories have changed so many times that we’ve lost track of the plot. But one thing hasn’t changed: The people most gravely affected by the virus are those who are elderly and have pre-existing conditions that complicate COVID’s damage. We’re willing to listen to arguments about putting others ahead of them in line, but if those arguments are race-based, you can sell that crap to the dog.
