Disturbed by reports that Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) got a little too close with a Chinese spy (alternatively referred to as Christine Fang and Fang Fang in the media), 17 House Republicans signed on to a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi this week, demanding that she “immediately remove” the potentially-compromised Swalwell from the House Intelligence Committee.
“Because of Rep. Swalwell’s position on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, his close interactions with Chinese intelligence services, however unintentional they may be, are an unacceptable national security risk,” the lawmakers wrote.
The Republicans said that, in light of the fact that the committee “handles some of the most sensitive information our government possesses—information critical to our national defense, we urge you to immediately remove Rep. Swalwell from his position on the House Intelligence Committee.”
Among the letter’s signatories were Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA), Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY), and Rep. Paul Gosar (R-AZ).
The Republicans reminded Pelosi that she was quick to rush to a microphone and declare Jeff Sessions unfit to serve as attorney general after it emerged that he met with the Russian ambassador.
“Rep. Swalwell withheld information for five years from the House Intelligence Committee about an ongoing Chinese espionage operation targeted at him and his own colleagues,” the letter read. “Obviously, Rep. Swalwell’s interactions with a Chinese spy were more dangerous and unusual than AG Session’s meetings with a Russian diplomat.”
We really get a kick out of Republicans highlighting the obvious hypocrisy that would entail this decision or that decision on the part of Nancy Pelosi, as though she gives one tinker’s damn about appearances. As far as we can tell, the major networks and the major newspapers have not uttered a single word about the Swalwell scandal. Axios, a leftish outlet, was the first to break the story, but after Swalwell insisted that this was just the Trump administration trying to get back at him for being “tough” on the president, the NBCs and New York Times of the world dutifully put their heads in the sand. If their readers and viewers ever heard of Swalwell’s ties to this spy, it will only be after they can run some spin on the story making it sound like this really was some sort of presidential revenge tale.
No, Pelosi’s not going to remove Swalwell from his committees any sooner than she’s going to censure herself for breaking COVID lockdown restrictions. Democrats only care about power, and that’s what they have now. Everything else – including national security – is just details.
