There’s a lot you can say about Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), but you can’t argue that she’s inconsistent. She has made it clear from the beginning of her fledgling political career that she has no love for the Democratic Party. Indeed, she spends at least as much of her time throwing bombs at her own party as she does fighting with conservatives. Earlier this month, she told an interviewer that she was slightly confused how she could even be considered to be in the same party as former Vice President Joe Biden. And she’s facing intense criticism from other Democrats for her refusal to donate to the DCCC, the congressional campaign arm whose aim is to support Democratic candidates for the House.
Now, while we might note Ocasio-Cortez’s commitment to consistency, this isn’t quite the same as praising her for not being a hypocrite. She is one. And nowhere is that clearer than in her relationship to dark political money. Not only does she run her own political action committee whose aim is to challenge Democrat incumbents who aren’t sufficiently socialist, she is also closely aligned with Organize for Justice, a PAC associated with Justice Democrats. The latter group was essentially responsible for recruiting and funding Ocasio-Cortez in her 2018 election campaign.
Now Organize for Justice is set to spend more than $500,000 in the 2020 presidential race. Will they be spending that money on anti-Trump ads? Not quite; their aim is to take down the so-called moderates in the primaries – specifically Biden and Pete Buttigieg.
Here’s one of many statements Ocasio-Cortez has made about dark money in politics: “Dark money is used to manipulate electorates. It is the enemy to democracy. Period. When politicians and corporations weaved their dark web of campaign finance, they created a ticking time bomb for foreign adversaries. To make our democracy safer, we need to get big money OUT.”
But, you know, until “we” do that, “she” and her socialist cohorts will continue to use dark money to their advantage.
In a statement to Quartz, a spokesman for Organize for Justice said that his group was simply trying to educate voters about the shortcomings of the Democratic frontrunners.
“Joe Biden is still the frontrunner in many national polls. He has a record that I don’t think voters have gotten to be as familiar with as they should be,” he said.
Well, we’re not going to complain about Democrat-on-Democrat violence, but we do find it amusing that these politicians – so high and mighty in their rhetoric about dark money in politics – are so ready to throw away their principles when it suits them. Amusing, but certainly not surprising.
