Biden: I’ll Remove Due Process Protections for Students Accused of Sexual Assault

An overheard conversation:

Steve: “You know, it really sucks the way the media has completely trashed Tara Reade. I thought these liberals were supposed to be all about believing women.”

Bill: “Yeah, well, maybe now people will see that the #MeToo movement was broken from the beginning. You can’t put the burden of proof on the accused. That’s not the way the justice system is supposed to work.”

Steve: “That’s true. Maybe it’s for the best. Now Democrats will understand that while we need to take sexual assault and harassment seriously, we also need to make sure ‘innocent until proven guilty’ remains a thing.”

Ah. Yeah. About that.

There was a quick moment or two where we thought like Bill and Steve. We thought, hmm, maybe this whole Biden/Reade thing will teach liberals a lesson about jumping to convict men on the basis of unproven allegations. Now that they’ve gotten a stiff shot of their own medicine, we won’t have to watch people like Brett Kavanaugh raked over the coals of hell for nothing more substantial than the (highly questionable) word of a single woman.

But come on. We forgot that liberals are utterly immune to hypocrisy!

But even though we’re not surprised by that hypocrisy…we’re a little surprised that it’s coming from Joe Biden himself.

The former vice president said Wednesday that, as president, he would reverse guidance from Education Secretary Betsy Devos that provides due process for college students accused of sexual misconduct.

“It’s wrong,” Biden said. “And it will be put to a quick end in January 2021, because as president, I’ll be right where I always have been throughout my career — on the side of survivors, who deserve to have their voices heard, their claims taken seriously and investigated, and their rights upheld.

“It lets colleges off the hook for protecting students, by permitting them to choose to investigate only more extreme acts of violence and harassment and requiring them to investigate in a way that dissuades survivors from coming forward,” Biden continued. “Survivors deserve to be treated with dignity and respect, and when they step forward they should be heard, not silenced. Today, Betsy DeVos and Donald Trump published a rule that flies in the face of that belief and guarantees that college campuses will be less safe for our nation’s young people.”

Imagine that. In the middle of being accused of sexually assaulting a staffer in 1993, Biden says that students accused of the same should not enjoy thorough due process!

Well then, Joe: You should suspend your campaign immediately.

But we won’t hold our breath.
