Former Vice President Joe Biden sat down with radical immigration activist (er, we mean, journalist) Jorge Ramos on Friday for a Facebook interview in which, predictably, the conversation turned to the subject of illegal immigration. Ramos, who is so extreme on the issue that even an open borders policy might not be enough to satisfy him, asked Biden if there was any difference between the way the Obama administration handled immigrants and the way the Trump administration has done it.
Ramos reminded Biden of a claim he made at a September debate.
“What Latinos should look at is comparing this president to the president we have is outrageous,” Biden said at the time. “We didn’t lock people in cages. We didn’t separate families. We didn’t do all of those things.”
Ramos said, “You actually did,” showing Biden a picture of an 8-year-old boy from 2014, who is indeed in a “cage.”
“What happened was all the unaccompanied children were coming across the border,” Biden explained. “We tried to get them out, we kept them safe, and get them out of the detention center… run by Homeland Security and get them into communities as quickly as we can.”
“Many people would say they were cages,” Ramos said.
“You know you’re not telling the truth here about the comparison of the two things,” Biden said. “Look how quickly we got them out and got them back to families, look at how … we sought the relatives here, we sought to get them into safe communities. We sought to get them out of the control of Homeland Security to get them safe. But they came unaccompanied, unaccompanied.”
We can’t recall the last time we saw Ramos doing anything of worth as a journalist, so we do appreciate that he was willing to look beyond the typical left-wing hype and state the obvious truth, which is that both Obama and Trump kept “children in cages.” You know, if you’re going to call it that, you at least have to be honest about the facts. And the facts are that while the world went into an absolute tizzy about the immigrant detention centers under Trump, they more or less ignored the situation under Obama. We certainly never heard the term “concentration camps” when #44 was in office.
On the other hand, our celebration is metered. Once you get past the visceral joy of seeing Biden called out for his duplicitousness, you confront the ugly shadow underneath: Even Biden and Obama – men who tried to implement amnesty from the Oval Office – are not extreme enough on immigration to satisfy the radical left. These freaks won’t be happy until the borders are wide open, ICE and Border Patrol are abolished, and every illegal alien gets 40 acres and a mule.
It’s a shame we can’t build the wall in such a fashion that would put people like Jorge Ramos on the other side of it.
