Another in a long series of gaffes…or a Freudian slip? That’s what people are wondering after Joe Biden said Saturday that he’s put together a “voter fraud organization” that’s going to help him win the election. It’s still not exactly clear what Biden meant by this remark, which he made in an interview with Crooked Media (perhaps appropriately).
“First of all, go to iwillvote.com to make a plan exactly how you’re going to vote, where you’re going to vote, when you’re going to vote,” Biden said. “Because it can get complicated. Because the Republicans are doing everything they can to make it harder for people to vote—particularly people of color to vote. So go to iwillvote.com.
“Secondly,” he continued, “we’re in a situation where we have put together, and you guys did it for President Obama’s administration before this, we have put together, I think, the most extensive and inclusive voter fraud organization in the history of American politics. What the president is trying to do is discourage people from voting by implying that their vote won’t be counted. It can’t be counted. We’re gonna challenge it and all these things. If enough people vote, it’s gonna overwhelm the system. You see what’s happening now. You guys know it as well as I do. You see the long, long lines in early voting.”
Uh. Right. Okay.
Even if we assumed that Biden didn’t literally mean he has constructed an organization committed to blanketing the country with fraudulent votes, this is one of the most confused, pointless paragraphs we’ve ever heard. Too many people voting is going to “overwhelm the system”? Is that supposed to be a good thing or a bad thing? Are we to understand that it’s Trump’s fault, somehow? What is Biden’s grand voter fraud army supposed to be out there doing?
We suppose this subsequent remark clarified things to some degree: “If, in fact, you have any, any problem, go to, and I don’t have the number, but it’s 833-DEM-VOTE. The letters D-E-M-V-O-T-E. Call that number. We have over a thousand lawyers, over a thousand answering the phone. If you think there’s any challenge to your voting, go to 833-DEM-VOTE. Dial those letters on your phone, that will get you the assistance that we have already put in place.”
Gotcha. If you can’t vote (because you aren’t registered or aren’t eligible or don’t have your proper ID or you’re not a U.S. citizen or you’re dead), you can call Biden’s lawyers and they’ll get you set right up. Sounds legit.
Maybe Biden said it right after all: This really does sound like a voter fraud organization.
