Chicago’s liberal Democrat mayor Rahm Emanuel has made it abundantly obvious that he is going to try and use President Donald Trump as a foil to further his own political ambitions, making him one of many local and state-elected Democrats around the country who see such an opportunity before them. But Emanuel is even more annoying and blatant about his ambitions than most and his “feud” with Trump has all the hallmarks of something he cooked up in his living room while developing a spreadsheet plotting out his next five political moves.
While Emanuel is out on the late-night talk show circuit looking for ways to get applause from brainwashed audiences, of course, his city is teeming with gang violence and his office is under investigation for covering up police misconduct. You would think such a scenario would impress upon Emanuel the importance of adhering to the law, but no. Instead, he’s filing lawsuits against the administration and going on press tours to make sure that regardless of how well Chicago’s citizen residents are protected, the city’s illegal immigrants will always have a safe haven in the Windy City.
It still boggles our minds to see how far out of their way these Democrats are willing to go to shield Central and South American aliens from the legal consequences of their actions.
Emanuel brought his ridiculous schtick to friendly territory on Wednesday night, appearing on Stephen Colbert’s “Late Show” for a grand old “Hate Trump Circlejerk.”
“Our motto: A city he’ll never sleep in,” Emanuel said of Trump. “We don’t want him. Look, Donald Trump is driving forward looking through the rearview mirror, and I’m not going that way because I want my city going that way and I want it to be a Trump-free zone.”
We guess this was supposed to be clever, but not only is Emanuel’s little punchline confusing and wordy, it only works if you believe the future of this country lies in throwing the doors open to any immigrant who wants to come to the United States. And if you think that’s the future, then God help us, we hope we live a short life. Has Rahm Emanuel SEEN what’s happening in Western Europe?
Given the state of Chicago’s safety and its perilous financial situation – made ever worse by the fact that residents and businesses are fleeing the city in record numbers – we don’t blame the mayor for picking a fight with the president. He has to do something to distract voters from the impending Detroitification of his home town. And since his policies are both responsible for and making worse the problems that have plagued the city for years, he’s probably less threatening to Chicago when he’s off the job than when he’s in the office.
If things keep going the way they’re going, Emanuel won’t need a motto to keep Trump out. The president, like most Americans, would rather go just about anywhere else in the country.
