If you came late to the show, you might not remember that there were Democrats running for president who weren’t named Hillary or Bernie. Though they were long gone by the time the primaries started heating up, Lincoln Chafee, Martin O’Malley, and Jim Webb were also candidates for the nomination.
Webb, a former senator from Virginia, appeared on Meet the Press this weekend to discuss the current state of the Democratic Party. In an interview with Chuck Todd, Webb said Democrats had moved “very far to the left” over the course of the Obama era.
“When you can’t have a Jefferson-Jackson dinner, which was a primary celebratory event of the Democratic Party for years, because Jefferson and Jackson were slaveholders,” Webb said. “They were also great Americans in their day. Something different has happened to the Democratic Party.”
He said the party had “been shaped toward identity politics,” causing them to lose “the key part of their base.”
“The people who believe that regardless of any of these identity segments, you need to have a voice in a quarters of power for those that have no voice,” he lamented. “And we’ve lost that for the Democratic Party.”
Webb said Democrat leaders were making a big mistake by not recognizing the message sent by the voters in the 2016 election.
“You’ve lost white working people. You’ve lost flyover land, and you saw in this election what happens when people get frustrated enough that they say, ‘I’m not going to take this,'” he said. “There is an aristocracy now that pervades American politics. It’s got to be broken somehow in both parties, and I think that’s why the Trump message echoed so strongly in these flyover communities.”
It’s actually worse than Webb admits. The Democrats are not only ignoring the truth of the election, they are doubling down on the very issues that allowed Trump to crush Hillary. They are surging even further to the left. They are putting their eggs in the Bernie basket. The Elizabeth Warren basket. They’re pushing Keith Ellison for DNC chair. They’re completely oblivious to the fact that you can’t become the exclusive “minorities party” and still win elections. It’s mathematically impossible.
Millions of Democrat voters are sick to death of listening to party leaders run down America, paint white Christians as the world’s great evil, and cater endlessly to illegal immigrants and leeches too lazy/stupid to get a photo ID.
By the time the politicians wake up, though, those voters may be too far gone to ever come back.
