No creature on the planet is as easy to trigger as a modern Democrat, and Gov. Ron DeSantis is perhaps second only to Trump himself when it comes to pushing their buttons. On Friday, the Florida governor did it yet again when he announced that he would honor the memory of the late, great Rush Limbaugh by lowering the flag.
“What we do when there’s things of this magnitude, once the date of interment for Rush is announced, we’re going to be lowering the flags to half-staff,” DeSantis said.
This is not the first time that DeSantis has made such an announcement, and he has a proven history of honoring both Democrats and Republicans. For instance, he ordered the flags lowered last year when Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg died, and he lowered them again last month after the attack on the U.S. Capitol.
Democrats didn’t complain about these orders, but they are beet-red about the latest one.
“Lowering the flag of the United States is a high honor reserved for those who have honorably and bravely served our state and our nation,” said State. Sen. Gary Farmer (D). “Unfortunately, Governor DeSantis has now transformed this distinction into a partisan political tool to salute a man who served no other interests than his own and did his best to deeply divide a country along political fault lines.”
Farmer doubled down on that statement on Twitter: “Any move to lower our flag in deference to a man who helped drive the hatred and inflame the prejudices against marginalized groups, people of color, women, and anyone who did not look like him or think like him is wrong, and should be rescinded.”
Farmer was joined in his outrage by Rep. Debbie Wasserman Shultz (D-FL), who said DeSantis’s decision to lower the flags for the conservative legend was “an embarrassment to Florida.”
“Limbaugh weaponized his platform to spread racism, xenophobia and homophobia across the nation,” said Wasserman Shultz.
Also enraged was Rep. Ted Deutch (D-FL), who said, “Florida is better than this.”
Even Hollywood got in on the action. Actress Patricia Arquette could barely type straight when addressing the governor’s decision.
“corrupt Florida Governor Ron desantis ordering flags at half mast in Florida for RUSH to celebrate the legacy of hateful rage filled racist homophobic anti Semitic misogynistic toxic energy he spewed for years says all you need to know. history will not be kind to him,” said the actress.
Well, that all depends on who is writing the history.
In any case, it’s gratifying to see that, even in death, Limbaugh can get under the skin of American liberals. You were truly one of a kind, Rush.
