Democrats’ War on Kavanaugh May Have Cost Them the Midterms

The Democratic Party has been known to pick fights it cannot possibly win, and they’ve done more of it than usual in the Age of Trump. Whether it’s putting the lives of illegal immigrants over those of American citizens or running against tax cuts that will do more to improve the lives of their constituents than any government program in the progressive playbook, this party has mastered the art of playing to the intellectual elites.

Unfortunately, it’s left them as a party that caters to two extremes: Welfare-dependent layabouts who just want to leech off the taxpayers, and hoity-toity coastal educrats who care more about virtue-signaling than actually solving problems. And with their latest doozie – the smear campaign against Brett Kavanaugh – they may have accidentally dug themselves into a hole they can’t get out of.

Democrats on Capitol Hill (and their cheerleaders in the media) saw the fight against Kavanaugh as one that would rally the liberal base and make the House of Representatives a sure thing come November. But while there is some evidence that the rabid voices on the left are really digging the public destruction of a white male conservative, nowhere is this smear campaign having a bigger impact than within the Republican base. According to a new NPR/PBS survey, Democrats have essentially lost their enthusiasm advantage heading into the midterms – an advantage they were counting on to win back control of the House, where they could really start #Resisting the president.

“The result of hearings, at least in the short run, is the Republican base was awakened,” said Lee Miringoff of Marist Opinion Polling, which was a partner in conducting the survey.

In July, when NPR last conducted the enthusiasm poll, Democrats had a 10-point advantage on Republicans. When they took the poll on Monday, that advantage had shrunk to only two points, which is within the survey’s margin of error.

Speaking of errors, it has to be slowly becoming clear to Democrats in the leadership that they overplayed their hand on Kavanaugh. They thought this was going to be their big War on Women success story for the year; instead, there is little evidence that American women are buying into it. Liberal women are, that much is certain. But then, those women were already a sure vote before any of this happened. Independents and conservatives on both sides of the gender divide see this as the farce that it is.

Additionally, Kavanaugh’s trip through hell and back has united the conservative movement in a way we haven’t seen since Trump first threw his hat into the 2016 ring. Even Bret Stephens of The New York Times found something nice to say about Trump in his column this week. THAT’S how much the Democrats have irritated the country’s conservatives!

The midterm polls have looked grim for quite a long time. In a way, the overeager, unhinged Democrats on Capitol Hill may have done us a huge favor.
