Remember that crisp September day in 2001 when white Christian nationalists hijacked airplanes and flew them into the Twin Towers? Remember back in 2016 when that white Christian nationalist walked into an Orlando nightclub to kill 49 people? Hmm, remember back in this very summer when cities like Minneapolis and Kenosha were destroyed by white Christian nationalists?
Well, if you think we may be misremembering these events, you can be sure that we’re not alone. A group called The Secular Democrats of America apparently remembers things happening this way as well. At least, that’s the only thing we can figure based on their new report to Joe Biden where they urge the President-elect to watch out for white Christian nationalists – a clear and present “national security threat.”
Backed by Democrat Reps. Jamie Raskin and Jared Huffman, the report offers a plan to “boldly restore a vision of constitutional secularism and respect in the land for religious and intellectual pluralism.”
“We’ve offered the new administration a roadmap to restore our basic constitutional values and protect science, reason and public health in American government,” Raskin and Huffman said in a statement.
The group informs the Biden team that Trump has “empowered the religious right in ways no other administration has before, making significant advances in enacting their Christian nationalist agenda.”
“The rise of white Christian nationalism is a national security threat,” the report warns. “We recommend you: encourage the Department of Homeland Security and Department of Justice to dedicate resources to de-radicalization programs aimed at hate groups, including, but not limited to, white nationalists; increase monitoring of such groups, including the online environment, and take action to address increased hate crimes toward minority faith communities; and shift rhetoric to label violent white nationalist extremists as terrorists.”
The group says that Biden’s attorney general should “confer with the Department Office of Legal Counsel to issue a memorandum regarding enforcement of the Establishment Clause in public schools, including students’ protection from school-sponsored proselytizing and teaching accurate, evidence-based, secular curriculum rather than creationism in the schools.”
Finally. Because if there’s anything wrong with American education these days, it’s that there’s simply TOO MUCH God involved. Come on, anyone can see that!
This goes to show, among other things, that if you shrink your echo-chamber enough, you can imagine there are problems where none exist. And if you can sprinkle some anti-white, anti-Christian rhetoric on top of your spurious agenda, you can be assured that Democrats will come running to support you.
If this is the foundation of Biden’s efforts to “unite” the country, he’s gonna have a bad time.
