In an interview with Sean Hannity on Fox News Wednesday, Donald Trump Jr. said that Democrats had embarrassed themselves and the nation with their first day of public impeachment hearings. “I’ve never seen anything more ridiculous,” the president’s son said of the inquiry.
The first day of the hearings unfolded in lackluster manner on Wednesday as the Democrats put Ambassador William Taylor and the State Department’s George Kent on the witness stand. The pair offered very little in the way of new revelations, other than to show the public how fundamentally weak the case for impeachment actually is. Specifically, it showed the extent to which the Democrats’ witnesses (and this goes also to the whistleblower who kicked off this mess) rely on secondhand hearsay to speculate on the president’s motivations and intentions.
“You see exactly what America voted against in 2016, career government bureaucrats doing their thing,” said Trump Jr. “Everything was hearsay, ‘I heard it from a friend, who heard it from a friend, who heard it from a friend.’ I’m saying, ‘this is a joke.’”
Apparently recognizing how absurd their case was becoming, Rep. Mike Quigley (D-IL) made the most idiotic statement of the hearing on Wednesday when he argued that hearsay evidence was actually better than direct testimony.
“Hearsay can be much better than direct,” Quigley argued. “Countless people have been convicted on hearsay because the courts have routinely allowed and created, needed exceptions to hearsay.”
Trump Jr. was taken aback.
“Then I heard the Democrats, and this is when you realize how bad or, frankly, nonexistent their case is, ‘well hearsay is often times much better than regular evidence.’ I’m saying, ‘did that guy say that with a straight face?’” Trump Jr. said. “So it’s better to have heard it from a friend who heard it from a friend who heard it from a friend than to have heard it with your own ears? I mean that’s the level of insanity that you’re seeing from these bureaucrats who’ve taken an anti-Trump position.”
The president’s son said that the hearings were also demonstrative of just how unfair the process was to Republicans and Trump.
“When Republicans start questioning, Adam Schiff changes the rules, changes the goal posts, pretends they can’t even ask that question anymore. It’s never ending. It’s a comedy at this point,” he said.
With the hearings available for the entire public to watch, the opportunity is ripe for Republicans to prove just how lame and desperate the Democrats have become. The only troubling thing is this: Many Americans will get bite-sized “analysis” of the hearings from the mainstream media – analysis that might as well come from the desk of Nancy Pelosi herself. This, of course, is exactly what the Democrats are counting on. It is their only chance of turning public opinion against President Trump.
