In an interview with “Fox & Friends” on Sunday, Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-NY) accused House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for exercising poor judgement in allowing Islamic mosque leader Omar Suleiman to lead the noon prayer at the House of Representatives.
Suleiman, who has a history of anti-Israel sentiments, was invited to the floor on Thursday to lead the Congress in prayer. The Texas imam was invited to the chamber by Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX).
“Either the speaker’s office did not vet this imam at all, or worse, they did vet the imam and then decided that it would have been OK for the imam to come onto the floor of the House of Representatives anyway,” said Zeldin. “It’s a bad call to have this person. It’s horrible judgment, and after the 2019 that we’ve had so far, where members of their own caucus are pushing anti-Semitism and anti-Israel hate, it was a bad judgment.”
We can’t say we love having Islamic preachers leading the prayer in Congress, but even if you were to invite one, you could probably find one with fewer vicious views. At the very least, fewer views that they express in public. Suleiman has made a number of remarks over the past few years that are nearly indistinguishable from the rhetoric of terrorists. This includes a social media post in 2013, where he expressed support for the Muslim Brotherhood. It also includes a post the following year where he deliberately took the side of the Palestinians in their latest war against Israel.
“God willing on this blessed night as the 3rd Intifada begins, the beginning of the end of Zionism is here,” he wrote. “May Allah help us overcome this monster, protect the innocent of the world, and accept the murdered as martyrs.”
Then, in 2015, he made his most disturbing post yet: “Want to know what it’s like to live under Nazis? Look no further than how the Palestinians are treated daily by apartheid Israel. Sickening.”
It was to that post that Zeldin pointed when he said that bringing Suleiman to the U.S. House of Representatives was a bad idea.
“Let’s just say all you found was that he compares Israel to Nazis,” Zeldin said. “That would be enough to maybe tell that member or other members of the caucus, ‘How about you find another imam if you want to have an imam give an opening prayer?’ But comparing Israel to terrorists, calling for and inciting violence, calling for a third Palestinian intifada or the posts on social media that are supportive of the Muslim Brotherhood — as that list goes further on, it’s a bad call to have this person.”
It’s distressing to see the infection that is now spreading throughout the Democratic Party, but this is the inevitable endgame for liberals who refuse to see the treachery at the heart of Islamism. They have decided that Muslims are a protected class, and it has blinded them to the truth about terrorism, Sharia, and other forms of political Islam. So much so that they can’t bring themselves to condemn Rashida Tlaib, Ilhan Omar, and others who use anti-Semitic language to rail against Israel. So much so that they will invite an imam like Suleiman without a second’s hesitation.
American Christians are already watching this infection spread with a wary eye. American Jews had better start watching as well.
