Color us shocked to read this piece of analysis from Axios, an outlet known for its liberal bias. In it, the site acknowledges a truth that the rest of the media has been loathe to address: The fact that Democratic nominee Joe Biden is skating his way to the election without facing any tough questions from the Washington/New York press.
“Since Aug. 31, Biden has answered less than half as many questions from the press as Trump — 365 compared with 753 — according to a tally by the Trump campaign, which the Biden campaign didn’t dispute,” Axios reported. “In that time, Biden has done approximately 35 local TV interviews, three national interviews and two town halls. Biden went almost three months without taking questions from beat reporters.”
Trump campaign spokesperson Andrew Clark said, “Biden has been the least-scrutinized presidential candidate in modern history at great disservice to the voters, but the press still has time to rectify that.”
Um, barely? And we don’t see anyone in mainstream journalism beating a path towards making it happen, in any case.
“Who’s ‘scrutinizing’ Trump more, Maria Bartiromo or Sean Hannity?” snarked Biden spokesperson Andrew Bates, ignoring the fact that Trump takes hard questions from hostile reporters almost every day.
But as Axios helpfully (and surprisingly) pointed out, Biden has been able to successfully avoid answering questions about many of the thorniest issues facing his candidacy:
His blunt view of adding new justices to the Supreme Court, which will be a priority for progressives if Judy Amy Coney Barrett is confirmed. Biden, who had criticized the idea in the past, finally said he’s “not a fan of court packing.”
Biden also has mostly gotten off easy on Medicare for All, police funding, Pentagon spending, fracking, reparations for African Americans, the Green New Deal and his support for the 1994 crime bill.
No mention of Tara Reade and the other women who have accused this candidate of inappropriate sexual behavior, we note, but we suppose we should be happy with what we got.
