The left is constantly wondering why no one else in the country ever takes them seriously when they point out racism in politicians, media figures, and general cultural establishments, but Sen. Dick Durbin just proved exactly why that is. In the middle of an absolutely frenzy of activity on the left, whereby the entire leftist establishment was trying to paint Trump as a terrible monster of a racist for calling certain countries “shitholes,” Durbin pipes up with what might be the dumbest thing we’ve heard a Democrat say this year.
Keeping in mind, of course, that the year is still very young.
Durbin was telling reporters about the bipartisan immigration meeting that brought us the now-infamous “shitholes” remark, and he apparently wanted to let the media know that in a stampede of high moral horses, his was the highest and most moral.
“When it came to the issue of ‘chain migration,’ I said to the president: ‘Do you realize how painful that term is to so many people? African Americans believe that they migrated to America in chains, and when you speak about chain migration, it hurts them personally,’” Durbin said.
Our favorite part is Durbin’s recollection of the president’s response. “He said, ‘Oh, that’s a good line.’”
Bwahahahah! It’s almost worth it for Durbin to have said this to the media just so we could get an image of Trump, his lips parted in a sly smile, saying, “Oh, that’s a good one, you slimy bastard.” Literally WHY would Durbin include this part of the exchange? Does he understand that the president was telling him he was full of it? Is he, in turn, winking to the media, admitting that he is, in fact, full of it? Or does he just not get it at all? Considering who it is we’re talking about, we’re going to have to go with the last option.
It’s barely worth “defending” the idea that chain migration is offensive to African-Americans, because we’ve seen no proof whatsoever that this is the case. And even if it were the case, we wouldn’t much care. Americans are under no obligation to start changing phrases because they happen to “sound like” phrases that offend minority groups. That’s absolutely absurd. Chain migration has nothing to do with black people. Durbin knows it, Trump knows it, and we’d imagine that 99.9% of black Americans know it. This is just another sleazy, hamfisted attempt to make the president look like an insensitive racist, and it failed miserably.
