“Loser Obstructionists”: White House, Trump Unload on Democrats

Let’s just put this up front: We never again want to hear Democrats call Republicans “obstructionists.” Any real or imagined high ground they may have claimed when Obama was president and Republicans were doing their best to slow his agenda has vanished with this weekend’s events. Democrats have epitomized the term “obstructionists” since Trump took office, and with their refusal to vote for a continuing resolution on Friday, they took full ownership of the government’s first shutdown since 2013. And make no mistake about it, they are actively harming American citizens for the sake of protecting a few hundred thousand illegal immigrants. That’s a fact, and it could be a painful one for Democrats heading into the midterms.

Both President Trump and White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders have been absolutely brutal in their efforts to show Americans exactly what happened on Friday. They know the mainstream media is going to carry water for the Democrats, so they’re doing everything they can to capture control of the narrative and explain how and why we got to this point. In a white hot statement on Saturday, Sanders said the Democrats were fully responsible for the breakdown.

“Senate Democrats own the Schumer Shutdown,” Sanders said. “Tonight, they put politics above our national security, military families, vulnerable children, and our country’s ability to serve all Americans. We will not negotiate the status of unlawful immigrants while Democrats hold our lawful citizens hostage over their reckless demands. This is the behavior of obstructionist losers, not legislators.”

In tweets over the last couple of days, Trump – irritated that the shutdown is stealing the spotlight away from what should be the celebratory one-year anniversary of his inauguration – said once again that Republicans should consider new legislative pathways to get around the Democrats.

“Democrats are far more concerned with illegal immigrants than they are with our great Military or Safety at our dangerous Southern Border,” he wrote. “They could have easily made a deal but decided to play Shutdown politics instead. #WeNeedMoreRepublicansIn18 in order to power through mess!”

And if that didn’t happen?

“If stalemate continues,” he wrote on Sunday, “Republicans should go to 51% (Nuclear Option) and vote on real, long term budget, no C.R.’s!”

We’re excited to see both the White House and the Republican Party leadership finally playing hardball with these entitled, confused Democrats. Surveys show that the American people do not favor shutting down the government to protect illegal immigrants, and we have a feeling that Democrats are going to pay a high price for their obstruction. But that will only happen if the GOP stands firm, stiffens its spine, and perfects the political messaging. So far, so good.
