Sen. Jeff Sessions managed to overcome fierce opposition from liberal Democrats to be confirmed Wednesday as the new U.S. Attorney General.
In the midst of the hearing, hilariously enough, it was revealed by Politico that one of Sessions’s biggest outside detractors – the NAACP – had actually given him the “Governmental Award of Excellence” just seven short years ago.
But this wasn’t political theater or anything, right?
As one of Sessions’s aides was cleaning out his Alabama office, they came across the award, which was presented to the senator in 2009 by the Mobile chapter of the NAACP. Sessions noted the accolade in a last-minute supplemental questionnaire to the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday.
The award would seem to contrast with efforts made by the NAACP in recent weeks to prevent Sessions from being confirmed. Last month, the organization’s president, Cornell Brooks, organized a sit-in outside the office of Sen. Chuck Grassley to protest the Alabama senator’s nomination.
“It is the ultimate irony,” said Brooks, “that we are going to have to break the law in order to ensure that we have an attorney general who will enforce the law – most assuredly, the Voting Rights Act.”
Speaking on the Senate floor in support of Sessions this week, Sen. Lindsay Graham said the disconnect between the 2009 award and the NAACP’s position in 2017 was remarkable.
“Apparently [NAACP President Cornell Brooks] doesn’t stay in contact with the NAACP chapter in Alabama,” Graham said Tuesday. “Most of the things said about Jeff Sessions and the way he acted as a senator could be said about almost all of us on this side who consider themselves conservative.”
This is essentially true of all of Trump’s Cabinet appointments. Look at the way Democrats went after Betsy DeVos, whose great sin was to be a lifelong champion of school choice. These Democrats are shocked – SHOCKED – that Trump is going to fill his Cabinet with conservative Republicans who believe in conservative Republican solutions. Apparently, they hoped he might appoint the next Eric Holder to lead the Justice Department.
They simply can’t believe that eight years of tireless work to open voting up to every illegal immigrant, criminal, and dead Democrat in the country was all for nothing. They had a plan, dammit! And now it’s been foiled by that meddlesome Donald Trump and his merry band of deplorables.
Can Democrats win an election in a country where the rule of law is respected?
That’s the looming question that has them on the verge of a collective nervous breakdown.
