Survey: Most Americans Scared to Share Their Political Opinions

Woke scolds and cancel-obsessed mobs have gotten what they want. According to a new survey from the Cato Institute, more Americans than ever are concerned that they could endure personal or professional hardships if they share their political opinions. And, since we live in an era where almost everything can be construed as a “political opinion,” what this really says is that a majority of Americans are worried that anything they say can and will be held against them. What a culture we’re building for ourselves in this new millennium!

From the Washington Examiner:

The survey, conducted by Cato in collaboration with YouGov, found 62 percent of Americans self-censor their political expression out of fear of offending others. Majorities across the political spectrum said they are worried about sharing their political opinions, including 52 percent of Democrats, 59 percent of independents, and 77 percent of Republicans.

Thirty-one percent of liberals, 30 percent of moderates, and 34 percent of conservatives said they are specifically worried about professional retribution for political speech. The only respondent group with a majority confident in sharing political opinions was the “strong liberal” group, 58 percent of whom said they were confident. Fifty-two percent of respondents who identified as “liberal” said the political climate prevents them from sharing some of their beliefs, while 64 percent of “moderate” respondents and 77 percent of “conservative” and “strongly conservative” respondents said the same.

Well, you’ve gotta love that ideological breakdown, eh? The only group that feels perfectly comfortable sharing their political opinions is the “strong liberal” one. You have to wonder how that happened. It couldn’t be that this exact group has been instrumental in pushing anyone who disagrees with them to the margins of society, getting them fired, getting them “canceled” on social media, and so on. When you’ve carefully designed a system of culture where your opinion is the only one that’s acceptable, we just bet you DO feel good about sharing that opinion. And dammit, if everyone else would just learn to agree with you, they wouldn’t have to be afraid!

And then, in the next breath, these left-wing fascists will tell you that there’s no such thing as cancel culture – that it’s just a made-up thing that Fox News invented to give grandpa something to rage about after dinner.

Well, it’s all too real, it’s pervasive, and it is succeeding wildly. Turns out that labeling everyone who disagrees with you a racist, sexist, transphobic, evil white supremacist is a really effective way to shut down free speech.

We can’t imagine how this could possibly turn out badly…
