Damn, if you can’t get your own wife just a little bit excited about your presidential campaign, then how do you possibly expect anyone else to wave your flag? But that’s apparently the situation that former Vice President Joe Biden has found himself in. While he’s still got a commanding lead in the 2020 Democratic primary polls, the general feeling on left-wing sites and message boards is that the liberal base would love to choose just about anyone else. Combine that with the fact that President Obama apparently tried to gently talk him out of running and the fact that he can’t go three days without making a verbal blunder of embarrassing proportions, and you have a guy who seems ripe to get his butt kicked next year.
But Joe Biden’s wife, Jill, is on the campaign trail as well, and she is doing her best to drum up some enthusiasm for the man at the front of the pack. You see, she told a group of teachers in New Hampshire this week, you don’t have to actually LIKE my husband or even think that he would make a great president. You just have to assume that he’s the most electable of all the candidates!
“I know that not all of you are committed to my husband, and I respect that,” Mrs. Biden said. “But I want you to think about your candidate, his or her electability, and who’s going to win this race.
“So I think if your goal — I know my goal — is to beat Donald Trump, we have to have someone who can beat him,” she continued. “Your candidate might be better on, I don’t know, health care, than Joe is, but you’ve got to look at who’s going to win this election. And maybe you have to swallow a little bit and say, ‘OK, I personally like so and so better,’ but your bottom line has to be that we have to beat Trump.”
In one sense, there’s nothing very surprising about Jill Biden’s plea; it’s basically the entire Biden campaign in a nutshell. Hey, I’m not crazy like these other folks on the stage here…and you know, I’m not going to go nuts on universal healthcare or decriminalizing the border or anything…and hey, I’m just good ol’ Uncle Joe, ready to go in there and give Trump what for. Please clap.
In another sense, it’s pretty remarkable to hear his wife just say it flat-out like that, especially this early in the campaign. “Yeah, I know you aren’t thrilled about my husband, but hey, we’ve got to win, right?”
Still, Biden’s poll numbers remain strong despite the clown car’s worth of competition, so maybe he’s onto something.
Or maybe Democrat voters just aren’t paying attention quite yet.
