On Saturday, a man named Willem Van Spronsen traveled to the Northwest Immigration Detention Center in Tacoma, Washington, armed with a rifle and several incendiary devices. Once on the property, Van Spronsen tossed those devices at cars and buildings before trying (unsuccessfully) to light a propane tank on fire. Police arrived on the scene within minutes, however, and after what we can only imagine was a very short standoff, shot and killed the 68-year-old. What could have very easily turned into a mass tragedy was thankfully averted by the quick, decisive actions of the Tacoma Police Department.
Now, in the aftermath, it’s time to talk about what might drive someone to do what Van Spronsen did.
This was not Van Spronsen’s first brush with immigration authorities. Last year, he was part of a protest at the same detention center. He was arrested after lunging at an officer and putting him in a chokehold. He was later found guilty of obstructing police and given a deferred sentence.
In a conversation with the Seattle Times, his friend Deb Bartley said Van Spronsen was “an anarchist and anti-fascist.”
“He was ready to end it,” Bartley told the paper. “I think this was a suicide. But then he was able to kind of do it in a way that spoke to his political beliefs. I know he went down there knowing he was going to die.”
Bartley said that she and other friends of the attacker received letters from him “saying goodbye.”
It’s at times like these that the liberal media’s grand hypocrisy really shines bright. Remember when that idiot shot up a Planned Parenthood in the northwest? The media couldn’t shove enough microphones in enough Republicans’ faces, asking them if they bore any responsibility for the shooting with their “incendiary” rhetoric about abortion. Remember when that loon in Florida was sending pipe bombs for Clinton and others? Once again, the liberal press focused relentlessly on Trump and conservative outlets like Fox News, blaming them for radicalizing the bomber against Democrats.
When something like this happens, though, or that guy who shot up the congressional baseball game? Oh, then you don’t hear a whisper about how maybe – just maybe – months of inflammatory coverage of “concentration camps” and dead migrant children could have radicalized these psychos.
We firmly believe that when someone like Van Spronsen does something like this, the buck stops at the perp. He, and he alone, is accountable for his actions.
But that doesn’t mean that there aren’t encouraging transmissions out there that are just waiting to be received by the mentally unstable. While Democrats and the liberal media may not bear responsibility for what happened here, it ought to make them think twice about some of the venom they’ve been spewing into our political atmosphere.
Not that we think for a second that it will.
