USA Today Pleads With Media: “Don’t Expose Whistleblower’s Identity!”

Abandoning any semblance of journalistic responsibility or integrity, the USA Today Editorial Board pleaded with the greater Washington media on Tuesday: Don’t expose the Ukraine whistleblower’s identity, because…well, just because!

“The fundamental promise of whistleblower protection is to create a safe space for a witness of wrongdoing to come forward and report it — and, for the sake of his or her professional reputation or even physical safety, to remain anonymous in doing so,” the editorial board wrote, already having given away their political allegiances with the use of that one phrase – you know the one.

“Nothing chills truth-telling in the halls of power like the risk of retribution, and no risk is more harrowing than unmasking potentially impeachable offenses by a president,” they continued. “So it may come as little surprise that Donald Trump — with his legacy and potentially even his job hanging in the balance — would turn the promise of whistleblower protection on its head. He has launched a vitriolic campaign to publicly identify the person who exposed his problematic July 25 phone call with the president of Ukraine.”

Yeah well, here’s the thing, USA Today. There’s a world of difference between the U.S. government exposing the name of the whistleblower – such that he can even be termed that – and the media doing their job. It used to be the media’s role to buck government in service of the public’s right to know. And the public has every right to know who this guy is, what his motivations are, and why his initial report to the Inspector General was at odds with the official readout of Trump’s call to Zelensky. We also deserve to know the extent of his interactions with House Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff, who is, as Trump noted this weekend, a “proven liar and leaker and freak.”

“We also now know the name of the whistleblower,” Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) said at Trump’s rally in Kentucky on Monday night. “The whistleblower needs to come before Congress as a material witness because he worked for Joe Biden at the same time Hunter Biden was getting money from corrupt oligarchs. I say tonight to the media, do your job and print his name!”

Exactly. If this guy wants to sit in the shadows and cast stones against the President of the United States, we should pay him no mind whatsoever. If he wants to take Trump out of office, then he should come into the light, stand by his words, and explain to Congress why he’s doing what he’s doing.

Be a man, Eric Ciaramella.
