Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), who now makes $174,000 a year and doesn’t have to worry about making ends meet the way she did when she was just a bartender in the Bronx, said Wednesday that people should simply refuse to go back to work when coronavirus stay-at-home orders are lifted for the sake of the economy. In an interview with Vice’s Anand Giridharadas, AOC said this is the perfect time for workers to unite against an unjust economic system.
“When we talk about this idea of reopening society, you know, only in America does the president — when the president tweets about liberation — does he mean go back to work. When we have this discussion about going back or reopening, I think a lot people should just say ‘no’ — we’re not going back to that,” she said.
“We’re not going back to working 70-hour weeks just so that we could put food on the table and not even feel any sort of semblance of security in our lives,” she continued.
The nerve of people who expect that Americans should work a job to put food on the table! What a backwards idea…
Ocasio-Cortez, though, is like many Democrats and leftists who want to use the opportunity provided by the coronavirus pandemic to remake America in their image. Some, like South Carolina’s Jim Clyburn, have been forthright and clear about their intentions. Others, like House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, have played their cards a little closer to the vest. But in all cases, to varying degrees, these leftists want to come out of the pandemic with the scales tipped a little further away from the free market and a little closer to big government socialism.
In the case of AOC, she would also like to see the pandemic used as a chance to move away from fossil fuels and into her vision of a Green New Future.
“You absolutely love to see it,” she tweeted when oil prices collapsed last week. Later, perhaps realizing that her tweet might come off as celebrating the thousands of jobs that could be lost in the oil industry, she deleted the tweet. Or maybe she just realized that with oil trading at below $0 a barrel, American citizens would be less excited about transitioning to wind energy – not more.
Picking on Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for making foolish statements, though, is like shooting fish in a barrel. Her particular ignorance isn’t the issue. It is that she speaks for a left-wing movement that is trying to use the coronavirus as an excuse to shove neo-socialism down our gullets. And as long as her ideology has an audience, she represents a threat to America at LEAST as potent as the virus.
