With a public hearing on Wednesday, Jerry Nadler’s House Judiciary Committee will push the impeachment process to the next level, building on the Intelligence Committee’s completed hearings to determine whether or not to recommend articles of impeachment to the full House for a vote.
Nadler’s hearing will not involve any fact witnesses but will instead be a showcase of cherrypicked “legal scholars” who will come before the committee and tell Democrats what they want to hear; i.e. that Trump committed “high crimes and misdemeanors” by trying to get the Ukrainians to investigate the Bidens. A sillier farce we could hardly imagine, but then, that’s all the Democrats are left with these days.
Thankfully, President Trump has the good sense not to lend these ridiculous proceedings with the legitimacy of his involvement. White House Counsel Pat Cipollone rejected an invitation to participate on Sunday with a scathing letter to Nadler deriding the entire inquiry as a “baseless,” “partisan” sham.
“Under the current circumstances, we do not intend to participate in your Wednesday hearing,” Cipollone wrote. “An invitation to an academic discussion with law professors does not begin to provide the president with any semblance of a fair process.”
According to Politico, “Wednesday’s hearing will be largely a discussion of constitutional issues, with lawmakers set to hear from a panel of constitutional scholars and law professors about the impeachment process — and whether an assortment of allegations against Trump meet the threshold of ‘high crimes and misdemeanor’ outlined in the Constitution.”
We could save taxpayers the time, but that would be to assume Nadler and the Democrats actually want to determine whether or not these allegations are serious enough to merit impeachment. That would be an unbelievably stupid thing to believe, although we assume that many Democrat voters fit the bill. They’ll be watching and listening with rapt attention as the Lawrence Tribes of the world tell the public that Trump has endangered our security – nay, our very democracy – by hindering our oh-so-special relationship with the Ukrainians.
Meanwhile, anyone with common sense will see this for what it is: The revenge of the Deep State, which has come unglued at this president’s refusal to go along with foreign policy recommendations that have led America down the most idiotic and costly rabbit holes for nearly a half-century. This cockamamie mockery of justice is destined to die a quick death in the Senate, but we are apparently condemned to listen to Democrats shout from atop their highest horses for at least another month.
Merry Christmas to all of us.
